To all the folks out there who think that this is racist, watch the cartoon" Swooner Crooner" and consider the context.

During this scene, a total of 5 chickens:

Nelson Eddy ("Shortnin' Bread")
Al Jolson ("September in the Rain"),
Jimmy Durante ("Lullaby of Broadway"),
Cab Calloway ("Minnie the Moocher", "Blues in the Night"),
and Bing Crosby ("When My Dream Boat Comes Home")

6 if you count Frankie who is not in this scene (Frank Sinatra singing "It Can't Be Wrong" by Dick Haymes and "As Time Goes By" (from Casablanca, 1942)) are caricatured and stereotyped only one of which is black (the Cab Calloway one).

All of them are caricatured and stereotyped in ways which are consistent with their ethnicity, profession and/or what they are known for which seems to strongly suggest that there is no racist intent yet folks have a tendency to disregard that and keep pointing to the Cab Calloway caricature.

Before you shout "racism", try to understand the time and context of the film first because it is annoying to see folks keep typing "racism" practically every time which black folks are involved.

Wild man pothead legends such as Mr. Calloway don't need words half the time... stoned scatting will suffice!

Cat has no clue what’s a viper.

What a wet towel, I bet you don’t vipe, bud.

@domitype

It is called Scat Singing for a very good reason - those old jazzers had a wicked sense of humor and they did get high (and drunk) quite a lot. Louis Armstrong smoked marijuana almost every day of his adult life, Fats Waller drank himself to death. Cab Calloway collected (and invented ) all sorts of slang words that his fellow musicians and other artists used back then - hey have become part of the language for Swingers, Boppers, Beats, Beatniks, Rockers, Hepcats, Hippies, Hipsters, and whatever comes next!

Cab Calloway is still one of the coolest acts in musicdom.

@PyroGothNerd

I love how sinister the song sounds

@mosesberkowitz3298

That is exactly the right word! A lot of Cab’s music seems to have a sinister, 1930s gangster vibe.

Early Count Basie sounds sinister too, so much so that it was used on a late night horror movie show here in Philadelphia. I believe the host's name was Stella. It's probably on you tube like everything else.
