The brainchild of guitarist, songwriter and producer Sam Vallen, CALIGULA'S HORSE - initially composed of just Vallen and vocalist Jim Grey - released its digital debut “Moments From Ephemeral City” in April 2011, and received instant acclaim from lovers of all strains of progressive music across many continents. Originally intended as a studio-only project, Vallen and Grey put out feelers for a live band soon after the album's release, assembling the current lineup of Geoff Irish on drums, Zac Greensill on guitar and Dave Couper on bass and vocals.
CALIGULA’S HORSE's approach to songwriting is uncompromisingly eclectic, but no less accessible to audiences of all different musical styles. They take influence from such bands and artists as Devin Townsend, Pain Of Salvation, Opeth, Meshuggah, Porcupine Tree, Steve Vai, Frost, Periphery, Karnivool, Muse, Steely Dan, The Beatles, and Frank Zappa amongst many others.
After months of rehearsing the recorded material, and also recording two additional tracks as the “Colossus” EP - released in September of 2011 - the “C-HORSE”, as some devotees like to abbreviate it to kicked off with live shows in October 2011. These are early days for a diverse and enthusiastic bunch of young virtuosos, but 2012 looks to be the breakout year for CALIGULA’S HORSE.

“But the writing is on the wall!”
Cried the fresh cut to the old
Wound still bleeding
As if he didn't know
As if he hadn't done his fair share of reading
Like he'd never felt the flames of revolution
The young man's simple solution
Peter out time and time again
Like he never spotted revolution's hole before the end
And the writing on the wall?
That impotent echo of inertia unmasked
The writing on the wall that really matters
Is in the Jewish quarter under bulletproof glass
It holds a lost family's past the top will fight to be forgotten
This whole fucking city's rotten to the core
But it's you, and it's me
It's the woman heavy with child
Screaming “please!” from the doorway
She clutches her belly as triage sets in -
When the night street sweeper lets her choose which one of her children
It's the jacked up jackboot with his foot on the neck of the pale girl, the frail girl
Dimming the light in the only eyes
Bright enough to see a pattern through the cracks
This lonely boy chewed up and swallowed by streets, spit, famine and rats
It's the words of the last librarian
The only man among us with enough courage and true grit
To save our knowledge from the fires we lit
When he burst, arms full, from the blaze
One proud voice in the panic
He called out
“Son, if you're going to cry then cry havoc!”It's the neighbourhood pill pusher, a family man
It's our weakness
It's our strength
We are the very fingertips of life's outstretched hand
But you'll find no spark in the sandstone dark
Because what the holy men won't preach
Is that the one thing that unites us is reach
We reach forward
And there aren't enough songs in the world
Not enough words in my tongue
Nor enough breath in my lungs
There is no echo that has lasted so long
No shadow that has stretched so far as we
We reach forward
And it's safe hands back down the line
In the endless chain
Not lost, never lost, when the strength
That we gained from their giving remains
We reach for the echoWe reach forward
For the moment between waking and sleep
For the sum not some of us
Together we leap
And yet we eat enough stone
That hard hearts hide a home
Under promise, understanding
Under children's skin and bone
And the writing on the wall you love
Was hand-penned by the censor!
So spit in the Cannon's Mouth!
And tell 'em ink sent you!
Mohamad Abdl Ghani
I had all the pieces that I needed
Saw the places in between
You taught me to breathe it all in
And i stood waiting in your welcome shadow
With nothing but the dark below you
I could believe you were light
Into me
And you were the mortar underneath the keystone
Heir to all who could not breathe
You showed them the love in the lie
But I saw the tragedy of life that lingers
Slipping through the city's fingers
Brother, I waited too long
Into me
Into my waiting arms
Promise to meet me there
Help me to find the start
Help me to fill my heart
Into my waiting arms
Building the dream we shared
If I could find the start
If I could fill my heart
Higher, stone by stone
Hollow hope, empty home
Don't look down, boy
We must be the ones
Ashes by us, and it's done
It's your choice, saint or the beast, boy
So give me the lightness of a life with no hope
The sight and sound as one, this new home
Tell me that you hear it too
Into me
I could see the end in each beginning
See enough to make the world sing
We heard the music in you
Into me
Into my waiting arms
Promise to meet me there
Help me to find the start
Help me to fill my heart
Into my waiting arms
Building the dream we shared
If I could find the start
If I could fill my heart
You have the choice, saint or the beast
Prove you can be force fed war and spit peace

Amazing. I don't normally go for monologues but this works as a fabulous prologue to the subsequent track, presented here as one piece - the way it should be.

Ink should be capitalised, it's a character in the album.
