Red Leather
Callow Youth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't you tell, they don't love you
Can't you tell, that I love ya
We're just an hour away from ya
All running
Shoot the messenger
You get this feeling
Were above you
We're in a minefield an’ I love ya
Who's driving?
You know I don't trust ya
All running
Shoot the messenger
Half a packet
You ran with it
I want this space filled
And you fill it
We have trust
But no limits
Red Leather
You tell her
The love, what you emit
We seen it, so we took it
We're gonna escape from this snake pit
Red Leather
You tell her
It's not love if it's not madness
Trying to escape from this harness
Phone rings
So you answer
All running
Shoot the messenger
You get this feeling
That we're above you
We're in a mine field an’ I love ya
Who's driving?
You know I don't trust ya
All running
Shoot the messenger
You get this feeling
That we're above you
We're in a mine field an’ I love ya
Who's driving, you know I don't trust ya

All running
Shoot the messenger

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Callow Youth's song "Red Leather" convey a complicated and tumultuous relationship. The singer begins by questioning their listener's awareness of the fact that they are not loved by others, while simultaneously professing their own love for them. The line "We're just an hour away from ya, all running, shoot the messenger" suggests a sense of urgency and danger in their connection. There is a feeling of being above others, possibly in a superior or overpowering position, likened to being in a minefield.

The next verse introduces the idea of trust and limitations within the relationship. The singer mentions a "half a packet" that their partner ran with, perhaps referring to a shared experience or a shared burden. They desire to fill the space between them, indicating a longing for closeness or emotional connection. The phrase "Red Leather, you tell her" could symbolize a plea for the listener to communicate their love openly and honestly, possibly to stand up for their relationship.

The chorus repeats the theme of feeling above others and being in a perilous situation. There is a suggestion of distrust and suspicion towards the listener, questioning who is in control and emphasizing a need for escape. The line "It's not love if it's not madness, trying to escape from this harness" implies that their love is intense and chaotic, and they are striving to break free from any constraints or restrictions.

The bridge introduces an interruption in the form of a phone call. The singer answers the call, but it only intensifies the sense of urgency and running from something. The chorus is repeated again, reinforcing the emotions of being above others, mistrust, and the desire to escape. The repeated phrase "all running, shoot the messenger" could symbolize a need to eliminate any external factors that threaten their relationship or the difficulties they face.

Overall, the lyrics of "Red Leather" depict a complex and emotionally charged relationship characterized by distrust, passion, a sense of danger, and an underlying longing for freedom and genuine connection.

El Dorta

A friend of mine gave me a tape with some rock ballads. Scorpions, Skid Row, but none of it hit me like WL's "'Till Death Do Us Part". That was shortly after they split up. Been a fan since.

Mike Tramp has an incredible story. He lived the good life in the 80's and his popular band broke up so quickly. Then he struggled big time for many years because of rejection from the same record labels and TV networks that embraced only a few years earlier. You have to give Tramp a lot of credit for being humble enough to get a rental car and drive across America to play an acoustic guitar to not very many fans, in not the best towns, for just enough money for gas, a meal and a place to sleep at night.
