Captain We're Sinking Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll stand in line to be beaten
by hot headed guys
They're too afraid they may leave them
And now daddy's little girl has a girl of her own
And they're sleeping in the closet of their best friend's new home
They're so cold

Her friend says "Keep your faith, because you get what you believe in"
But halfway through the rosary her baby starts screaming
She asked "You died once, to free me of my sins"
"Well I've got more than I can count to die for me again"

"Have you seen my life?"
"It's like I don't even try"
"Have you seen my life?"

Well tell me I crossed the line
of being out of my fucking mind
when I fill up with you

She got to the part about the people and the Exodus
She ___ saying yeah don't forget about the rest of us
You're drunk off wine, but you're sobering up with bread
I'm not sorry for the things I said

Well I don't blame
Not you anymore
Cause I will save you just like before

And tell me I crossed the line
of being out of my fucking mind
when I fill up with you
I crossed the line

I crossed the line
I crossed the line

Overall Meaning

Captain We're Sinking's song Montreal tells the story of a troubled relationship and explores themes of religion, sexuality, and domestic violence. The song starts with a vivid image of the singer willing to stand in line to be beaten by hot headed guys. These hot headed guys are presumed to be the partners of the women who are in abusive relationships. As the song progresses, the singer talks about daddy's little girl who now has a girl of her own and is sleeping in the closet of their best friend's new home, presumably because they are trying to hide from someone.

The song takes a turn when the singer starts talking about faith and religion. Her friend tells her to keep her faith because she will get what she believes in. However, halfway through the rosary, her baby starts screaming, and she questions her faith, believing that it may not be enough to save her from the hardships of her life. She then asks if Jesus died for her once, would he do it again if she had more sins.

The song ends with the singer talking about the Exodus and urging people not to forget about the rest of them, implying that there are still people going through tough times. She then talks about how the bread can sober people up, and she's not sorry for the things she has said in this conversation. The final verse seems to indicate that the singer has come to terms with her past and is ready to move on from it. She has crossed the line of being out of her mind and is ready to start anew.
