They later developed into psychedelic grind and gradually became more and more avant garde. Their final album Screaming Machines was a psychedelic and disonant sounding metal album and was at least at the time of the release one of the weirdest records ever released. They never formally split up the band, but have made no sound since 1996 and the members have no contact with each other anymore. All of the members have played or still play in Therion.

This a truly magnificent album. The way they combine grindcore with technical and progressive elements, in a very organic fashion

Check out screaming machines, I cant even describe it, it's so different from this, trippy af, some good punk riffs, but its deathmetal blended with the doors lol, and that description still isnt right, it's a total acid freak out album lol
Ur Maw
Was going to mention that distinct grind sound

One of the best and most original band from Sweden! Just amazing!!!
SunShine
This album is a stunning piece of work from the Swedish metal era of the early 90s.
I miss the grindcore of the old days. Today's triggered drums so that drummers can play their blast beats don't impress me at all.

@Teratology Late answer but an answer. I agree completely with what you wrote here. Interesting you brought up the counter-culture angle. It's very important and I agree that it's barely existent today in the modern world.
Pipes Thunder
I agree with you with that point of todays shitty drums, old playing and production where more blasting a in the face, and reveal the real power of touch of the musician, and trascend more energetic.
Teratology
@SunShine Yeah, it's gone full circle again like in the mid 70's before punk with the dinosaur rock bands left over from the 60's. It was pre-packaged department store hippie; complete with off the shelf unicorns and paisley. Today there are many metal/ hard rock bands that seem created by corporate record labels but try to look and sound "underground." Maybe they're not, but it seems like it. Authentic counter-culture is very important. Ironically, counter culture is almost an absolute necessity for civilization to survive. That's how we constructively "unlearn" things we're taught. There's very little of that going on.

@doomsday hour hehe yeah. They had to hammer down like fucking crazy back then.
It's awesome to hear how sometimes they lose stamina and the snare can barely be heard at the end of a song at some albums from this era of grindcore.. Or they managed to clash the drumsticks together while banging on the entire drumset and so on. :)
These modern ways, that too many metal bands do, with everything being processed through computers and stuff to make these super clean sounds (and how everything needs to be heard equally at all times) killed the spirit of the music for me.
