Let It Rock

Working on the railroad with the steel driving hammer
Gotta make some money to buy some brand new shoes
Trying to find somebody to take away these blues
"She don't love me" hear them singing in the sun
Payday's coming and my work is all done
Later in the evening when the sun is sinking low
Sitting in a tepee built right on the tracks
Rolling them bones until the foreman comes back
Pick up you belongings boys and scatter about
We've got an off-schedule train comin' two miles about
Everybody's trembling and running around
Picking up their money, tearing the tepee down
Foreman wants a penny about to go insane
Trying to get the workers out the way of the train
Engineer blowing the whistle loud and long
Can't stop the train, gotta let it roll on
The lyrics of Let It Rock by Carl Perkins Jeff Healey Jerry Lee Lewis Ronnie Hawkins and The Band describe a day in the life of a railroad worker in Mobile, Alabama. The worker is trying to earn enough money to buy new shoes and forget about the fact that his woman doesn't love him anymore. He hears his fellow workers singing the same blues in the sun, but he is hopeful that payday is coming soon. Later that day, the workers are waiting for the train to come, sitting in a tepee they have built next to the tracks. They pass the time by gambling, but when the foreman comes, they have to scatter and get back to work. Suddenly, an off-schedule train is coming, and everyone is scrambling to pick up their belongings and get out of the way. The foreman is trying to get the workers out of danger, and the engineer is blowing his whistle, but the train can't be stopped. In this song, we see a slice of everyday life that is seldom celebrated, and the musicians do it justice by giving us a rollicking rock n' roll tune with some excellent guitar work.

Playing this video for just a little while all of a sudden makes everything in the world right again. Seeing Ronnie in prime form surrounded by sooo many legends. Jeff doing Down in the Alley.....wow. Since I lost my left arm in an MVA my life highlights will be forever poised on that stage with him in the 70s and the 90s. Ronnie was the best thing that ever influenced the Canadian Music Industry. I'll always love you Ron.
