What It's Like
Carlos Santana feat. Everlast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We've all seen a man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you fucking slob," is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues

Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like

Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom that said he was in love
He said, "Don't worry about a thing, baby doll I'm the man you've been dreaming of"
But three months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "Goddamn, if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls"
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walking through the door
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose

Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like

I've seen a rich man beg
I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
I've seen a loser win
And a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie (uh)
I've seen the good side of bad
And the downside of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon
Drank from the golden cup
And smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start

I knew this kid named Max
Who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late
He liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night, there was a big gunfight and Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way, at least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose

Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like

Then you really might know what it's like
To have to lose

Overall Meaning

"What It's Like" is a song that showcases a range of societal issues faced by various people. The song starts with a scene of a man begging for change at a liquor store, with a shame in his eyes. The man's dirty appearance, dreadlocks, and mangy hair indicate that he is homeless and struggling to make ends meet. The hypothetical irony in the lyrics is emphasized by the statement, "God forbid you ever had to walk in his shoes because you really might know what it's like to sing the blues." This statement is poignant as the singer is also saying that people should not judge others without knowing their struggles.

The second verse delves into the life of Mary, who gets pregnant by a man named Tom, who later abandons her. She decides to abort the baby, but she faces backlash from people who call her a sinner, killer, and whore. The song continues questioning the judgmental attitude toward people who are living in deplorable conditions, including Max, who gets killed while dealing drugs. His wife and children are left with the burden of handling his death, which reveals the harsh reality that comes with playing even the "bad" side of the game.

"What It's Like" highlights the importance of empathy in our society. By showcasing various life situations and difficulties, the song urges us to be more compassionate towards others. Challenges, limitations, and problems come in different packages, and we cannot be quick to judge others without first having walked in their shoes.

slept on a piece of cardboard in a vacant field every night spent half the day or more (flying a sign) to get enough money for a nik of weed and a 4 pack of naty ice
spent the rest of the day getting wasted just to ease the pain
spent 4 years doin that
had enough started to reach out to get help
spent another 4yrs finding out how fu@ked up and dysfunctional the homeless support system is

This song came out when I was 19. I am now 43 and have lived every word of this song. Don't ever judge someone, you have no idea the burdens they are carrying. Be kind. To others and to yourself.

@HipHopCantSaveMe

I just posted almost the same thing.
We were young and dumb 25 years ago.
Now we are grown up and this song hits too close to home.

Many died from drug addictions, suicide, etc.

It's a crazy world 🌏
