The Game Of Love
Carlos Santana feat. Tina Turner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me
Just what you want me to be
One kiss
And boom you're the only one for me
So please tell me
Why don't you come around no more?
Cause right now
I'm crying outside the door of your candy store

It just takes a little bit of this, a little bit of that
It started with a kiss
Now we're up to bat
A little bit of laughs, a little bit of pain
I'm telling you my babe
It's all in the game of?

Love is
Whatever you make it to be
Sunshine
Instead of this cold lonely sea
So please baby
Try and use me for what I'm good for
It ain't saying goodbye
It's knocking down the door of your candy store

It just takes a little bit of this, a little bit of that
It started with a kiss
Now we're up to bat
A little bit of laughs, a little bit of pain
I'm telling you my babe
It's all in the game of love
It's all in this game of love

You roll me
Control me
Console me
Please hold me
You guide me
Divide me
Into me

So please tell me
Why don't you come around no more?
Cause right now
I'm dying outside the door of your loving store

It just take a little bit of this, a little bit of that
It started with a kiss
Now we're up to bat
A little bit of laughs, a little bit of pain
I'm telling you my babe
It's all in the game of love
It's all in the game of love
It's all in this game of love
Let's play the game of love

Roll me
Console me
Please hold me

I'm out here on my own
On my own

Overall Meaning

The song "The Game of Love" featuring Tina Turner, by Carlos Santana is a love ballad that describes the complexities of the game of love. The lyrics essentially convey a message about the dance of love and the turmoil it can create. The song is about a man who is trying to figure out the right moves in this game by asking his collaborator what she wants him to be, who then replies with a request for a kiss. The song is about the push and pull in a relationship, as they both try to navigate their feelings. He asks her why she doesn't come around anymore while he cries and waits outside of her candy store. The lyrics suggest that love takes a little bit of everything: pain, kisses, laughs, and even the ability to console each other. Santana uses metaphors to describe the way that love is like a game, with control and pain on one side, and sunshine and guidance on the other.

The second verse suggests that love is whatever you make it to be. The writer suggests that sunshine is better than a cold, lonely sea. He implores his love interest to use him for what he's good for, and not to say goodbye. The bridge is a statement of love and devotion, indicating the complexities of the relationship with metaphors for control, transforming, and guidance. The chorus repeats "It's all in the game of love," emphasizing the idea that love is a game that they are playing together, and that the outcome is ultimately determined by the moves they make.

I loved Michelle Branch' original. She was 19 when this song was released in '02. Tina's version is that of a mature woman singing the same song, which is actually very good. I like both versions.

David Cook, MFS

The original was by its writer Gregg Alexander. There were several versions done before deciding on Michelle Branch, who was the last one. Clive Davis didn't like having a male voice (Gregg Alexander) for vocals, and had Tina Turner do it, but she declined to make a video. This video is that recording with someone just making up a video of various Tina Turner stuff for it. Then Macy Gray sang it, and she didn't like it.
Here is a link to the first Gregg Alexander recording of it.
