Grow Old with Me
Carpenter Mary Chapin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Grow old along with me
The best is yet to be
When our time has come
We will be as one
God bless our love
God bless our love

Grow old along with me
Two branches of one tree
Face the setting sun
When the day is done
God bless our love
God bless our love

Spending our lives together
Man and wife together
World without end
World without end

Grow old along with me
Whatever fate decrees
We will see it through
For our love is true

God bless our love
God bless our love

Overall Meaning

In "Grow Old With Me," Mary Chapin Carpenter sings about the beauty of love and the hope that it endures even as time passes. The song is a pledge of fidelity and a desire to age together gracefully with their partners. The opening lines prime the listener for a profound message that the beauty of life doesn't have to end at youth. It starts with the declaration "Grow old along with me," a pledge of fidelity to age gracefully with the love they have. The phrase "The best is yet to be" implies that life has more treasures for the couple despite their ageing. The lyrics that follow emphasize the connectedness between the couple, courage and commitment to loving each other through whatever life has in store for them. Through it all, the song's message remains that their love will remain strong in the face of the toughest challenges.

She has the perfect voice for this.

And this expresses my disposition, too. Just be happy being myself. I grew up around persons who were the opposite—social climbers. They weren’t good at anything so much as they were great at being dissatisfied. I hated being that way when I used to be that way; I hated going through this world with the realization my whole life was a self-created prison.

Like it really matters—what someone else has, what someone else is known for. This world doesn’t know me, but God does. God who created the mountains and the heavens above them—that’s who remembers me when I was a boy. And there’s something else?

Others are not so fortunate. I mean, they have a lot more stuff than me, but they are still not so graced. All they know is what others think of them. Those who are strangers, and never become more than strangers. One day the strangers don’t give them the appraisal they want, and they hate them—hate people they don’t even know.

Then there are those who think if they cheat me out of this or that opportunity it changes me. But it doesn’t. The opportunities are whatever I make of them, not whatever they make of me. And so I seem indestructible to those who are always destroying themselves, never realizing who their own enemy truly is.

This song was played at my wedding to my Cathy. She asked me if I would play this at her funeral service. I did last month when she passed away from cancer. The Woodlands, Texas

A friend sang this song when I married my husband 13 years ago. He died a year ago today and I listened to it for the last time at the exact time he left me. The people we love and those who love us are only on loan to us from God, one day He will want them back.
