Don’t forget, that the temperance movement, women’s suffrage and first wave feminism are all linked.

At the time, if your husband got drunk and beat you, you didn’t have any recourse. If you’re husband got drunk and didn’t go to work, it wasn’t like a woman would be able to find a job making the same amount of money. And divorce laws made it hard to get divorced so if you were married to drunk, it was very difficult to get out of that marriage. (and if you didn’t get divorced, you were likely stick with little or no income. Child support and alimony were harder to come by back then.)

And if a man got drunk and harassed or even raped a woman, what would the consequences be for the man? Probably very few, at least if he was white.

Today, we address the behavior and the rights, not the alcohol. (well, we address the alcohol on a case-by-case basis, not by sweeping laws.) But at the turn of the century our society would have a long way to go before things like no fault divorce laws and equal pay. In fact, women were still considered the property of their husbands.

So banning alcohol seemed like a much more reasonable and attainable way to solve these problems. Women probably had a tough time imagining a world where they weren’t trapped.

So you can thank women’s rights for making the fight for prohibition a thing of the past. Now that we have recourse, we can leave alcohol alone.

Says at the beginning she lived in Kansas, a dry state at the time. That means the government of Kansas had outlawed alcohol and liqour. In the video we all watched it states she was only arrested initially for breaking legal items of monetary value; mirrors, pictures, and the like.

Many places in that era did not have a liscences to sell booze cause they were expensive to have. The bars she riffed up were illegal because they sold alcohol with no liscence so they could do it cheaper. There is a flip side this story many don't mention and that it is common that the owners of legally established bars were on her side. It was how she gained so much traction with men by essentially providing customers to high end bars and taverns. If anything she was seen as a hero in the papers and church because they were run by business owners who were profiting off of her antics.

This video completely misses the point, Nation was against alcohol because in the 19th century women had no legal property rights and the corporations that are still exploitative paid so little the men would spent their meager earnings on getting drunk,and often, physically abusing and raping their wives. It's only in the last 40 years that the legal statute has made rape between married couples a legally recognized crime. She didn't hate alcohol. She hated the violence and addictition that can cause these men to spend their wages while their children starved and then were expected to be their sex slaves.
The Christian Temperance Women's Movement was the largest group of its time and was the precursor of the Suffragette movement. I am not a man hater. I understand why these men wanted to drink their cares away, Only, in the last two decades has income inequality rivaled that of that time period leading up to the crash of 1929 and corporate overlords were underregulated and task masters similar of today. At the time the people serving the alcohol were breaking the law…and you really do need to look into her history. Her husband was addicted to alcohol and she begged the bars he went to not to let him get drunk. He eventually drank himself to death. She blamed them for his death, and the downfall of her family because they wouldn’t listen to her. Look at it this way, if your son was addicted to meth, and you knew who his drug dealer was, and begged him to stop giving him meth, he didn’t listen, and your son died of his addiction you’d probably be a little upset at the drug dealers of the world right? Nobody talks about just how hopelessly addictive alcohol can be…we don’t put it on the same level as drugs because culturally it’s accepted.

Finally, a thoughtful comment! I think she wouldn't smash stuff to make her point. She might have been a Mormon, worked to create more homeless shelters, run AA meetings, gone to support groups like Alanon.
