Since You're Gone
Cars The Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Since you're gone
The nights are gettin' strange
Since you're gone
Well, nothing's makin' any sense

Since you're gone
I stumbled in the shade
Since you're gone
Everything's in perfect tense, well

I can't help it
When you fall apart
And I can't help it
Guess you better start

That is forgettin' about you (since you're gone)
Since you're gone
Nights are gettin' strange (since you're gone)

Since you're gone
Thrownin' it all away (since you're gone)

Since you're gone
The nights are gettin' strange (since you're gone)
Since you're gone

Thrownin' it all away
I can't help it
Everything's a mess
I can't help it

You're so treacherous
When it comes, to tenderness
(Since you're gone)

I can't help it
Everything's a mess
I can't help it
You're so treacherous
Oh, where's that tenderness?

(Since you're gone)
Since you're gone
I missed the peak sensation
(Since you're gone)

Since you're gone
I took the big vacation
(Since you're gone)
Well, never feel sedate

(Since you're gone)
Well, the moonlight ain't so great
(Since you're gone)
Since you're gone

(Since you're gone)
Well, I've thrown it all away (since you're gone)
When the night

(Since you're gone)
Strange
I've thrown it all away (since you're gone)

Well, since you're gone (since you're gone)
Since you're gone

Since you're gone (since you're gone)
I've thrown it all away (since you're gone)

Overall Meaning

The song Since You're Gone by The Cars appears to be about the aftermath of a breakup. The lyrics speak to the sense of loss and disorientation that can come after someone leaves. The singer suggests that since the subject of the song has left, nothing makes sense anymore, and they've been thrown off balance. The nights have become strange, and the dreamlike quality of the surreal landscape they describe seems to mirror the bewildering new reality in which they find themselves.

The lyrics suggest a kind of impotence, indicated both by the singer's inability to help when the subject of the song falls apart, and their sense of helplessness when confronting the mess that remains after they're gone. The lines "I can't help it, you're so treacherous when it comes to tenderness" seem to be an acknowledgment that the relationship may have been unstable from the beginning, with an undercurrent of danger lurking beneath the facade of tenderness.

Overall, the song conveys a sense of mourning for what has been lost, and a kind of acceptance that things will never be the same. The final lines "I've thrown it all away" suggest a reckoning with the past and a recognition that it's time to move on.

I lost my wife of 27 years on Dec 11, after she battled cancer for 4.5 years. She was only 57. I miss her desperately. We both loved these guys since 1978. Now I can't listen without losing it. Especially this song. I love you Nancy. I miss you so so much

@Cooldad24

I'm sure she misses you as well and is watching from above.

So sorry for your loss.
She & you have great taste.
Growing up in Scotland, very few people knew about this song.
I loved it then. I love it now.
Try to a bit of happiness every day.

I wonder if The Cars knew how much we loved them? They were quietly one of the best bands us kids from the 80's grew up with. I love how all the movies from the 80's included at least one song of theirs. You HAD too, they define that time, and were one of the few bands that crossed the musical boundries of rock, punk, and alternative.

@schultzjohnd

Well said... always loved this group
