Currently, the Cat Empire comprises Ollie McGill (keyboard and backing vocals), Ryan Monro (bass and backing vocals), Felix Riebl (percussion and vocals), Harry James Angus (trumpet and vocals), Will Hull-Brown (drums) and Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwhala (decks, percussion). They also have recurring guest musicians. A strong, recurrent theme of their music is a rejection of excessive materialism, war and intolerance and an enthusiastic embrace of cultural diversity and a simple, carefree life. The band treats their fans kindly, doing things like sending out personally messaged and autographed postcards to members of their volunteer promotional teams across Australia.
The band's name was taken from the title of a drawing by Felix Riebl's younger brother, Max, and its distinctive cat's eye icon, which is also known as "Pablo", was created by Ian McGill, Ollie McGill's father.

Cat Empire Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
"what do you to survive?"
He said 'oh my dear listen here
And this is what he cried
On my feet I wear two shoes for dancing
"dancing to be free"
My feet they're paying tribute to
My knees they got some cuts and bruises
From skating all my days
'Cuz when I skating with my friends
My troubles drift away
I say my legs they're wearing baggy pants
I like to move around
Cuz getting down and jumping up
These are some good things that I found
Aeehhhiiiaaaaa
Boom shak the empire be rising
Aeehhhiiiaaaaa
Boom shak we making some loving
Aeehhhiiiaaaaa
Boom shak the greedy men running
Aeehhhiiiaaaaa
Boom shak got two shoes for dancing
My waist it's got a slinky belt
With a clip that's quick to open
Because loving is the sweetest thing
And from my waist it happens
And my stomachs got some tasty food
That's making me feel good
Cuz sharing some meals is something
I wish the world could do
And my chest it wears a singlet
Ah my chest it beating proud
My chest suggest I am a man
That no institution can knock down
And around my neck is superstition
Hanging from a chain
Because I got my gods but in the end
I make my own way
CHORUS
My mouth it's got a great big smile
That shows some great big teeth
To friends it brings a happiness
And to enemies it brings defeat
And my eyes they've got some vision
That can see through many lies
Well my eyes they look for better things
The better things to see in life
And my ears are wearing head phones
That do play my favourite songs
Not music I'm told to like
But the songs that make me dance along
Cuz on my feet are shoes for dancing
'dancing to be free'
My feet they're paying tribute to
The Bobby Marley legacy
The lyrics to The Cat Empire's "Two Shoes" are a celebration of life, freedom, and positivity. The singer responds to a woman's question about what he needs to survive, by talking about how his physical body is equipped with various things that help him enjoy life to the fullest. The song opens with the singer talking about his feet, and how they are adorned with shoes for dancing. He refers to the Bob Marley legacy, indicating that music and dance are his escape from the troubles of the world.
The lyrics then go on to describe other parts of his body, and how they help him live life. For example, his knees have cuts and bruises from skating, which is another form of escape for him. His waist has a slinky belt with a clip for easy opening, indicative of his free-spirited nature when it comes to love and relationships. His chest wears a singlet, symbolizing his pride and confidence as a man who cannot be knocked down by any institution. He wears a chain with a superstition around his neck, indicating his belief in individualism and the ability to create his own destiny. Finally, his mouth has a big smile with great big teeth, showing his positivity in life, and his ears wear headphones that play his favorite songs, not music that he is told to like.
The larger message of the song is about living life to the fullest, being true to oneself, and embracing individuality. It is about celebrating all the things that make us who we are and enjoying them to the fullest.
