Driftin' Blues
Charles Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I'm drifting and drifting,
Like a ship out on the sea
Well I'm drifting and drifting,
Like a ship out on the sea
Well I ain't got nobody
In this world to care for me

If my baby would only take me back again
If my baby would only take me back again
No, I'm not good for nothin'
Well I haven't got no friends

I give you all of my money,
Tell me what more can I do

Go get some more, go get some more
Go get some more,

I give you all my money,
Tell me what more can I do

Go get some more, go get some more
Go get some more,

Well you just a good little girl
But you just won't be true

Bye-bye baby, baby bye-bye bye-bye,
Bye-bye baby, baby bye-bye bye-bye,

It's gonna be too late baby
I'll be so far away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Charles Brown's song "Driftin' Blues" paint a picture of a man who is lost and alone. He feels like he's out on the sea without a compass or direction, drifting aimlessly with no one to care for him. The repetition of the opening line "Well I'm drifting and drifting" emphasizes the hopelessness and inevitability of his situation. The man's despair is further punctuated by the fact that he has no one in the world to care for him.

The next stanza shows the man's desire to be reunited with his lover. He understands that he's not good for nothing and has no friends, but he knows that if his "baby" would only take him back, he'd have a reason to live. The repetition of the line "If my baby would only take me back again" shows the man's desperation for the love and companionship he's lost.

The last stanza shows the man's lack of trust in his lover. He gave her all of his money, but she still won't be true to him. The line "Well you just a good little girl, but you just won't be true" highlights the man's pessimism and lack of faith in others. The song ends with the man bidding his lover goodbye, hinting that he's given up on love and is ready to move on, even if it means he'll be far away from everything he's known.

Haven't heard this song in years, woke up about 3:45 this morning with it on my mind.

What a cool song. You can still hear the jazz influence, yet it is recognizably the blues as well.

He performed it was the New York Rock and Soul Revue in 1991. I put both versions in my NYR&SR playlist. Thanks for the upload!

There was one deleted scene in the movie "Ray" where Jamie Foxx, as Ray Charles, played this track in a lil blues bar, before he's running famous.
I love this scene also because Jamie Foxx sang and played it for real and he really does sound like Ray ❤

I've always listened to the John Lee Hooker version, which I love dearly. This, the original, is incredible. Just heard it on the radio here in the UK, thanks for the upload. ^_^

Charles himself performed it live in 1991 on the "New York Rock and Soul Revue" album. Thanks for the upload...
