Tightrope
Charlie & Inez Foxx Lyrics

Whoo ou ou
Whoo ou ou ou
I'm not the one
To mess around
Baby tell me are you in or out
Are you in or out
Or just repeating the same thing
It has taken a hit on me
But I can't quit you see
And it's so confusing
It's so confusing
I don't do things by halves
Are you having a laugh
Well I've been around
And I'm telling you now
That we're walking on a tightrope
I don't wanna to look down
There's no one waiting
To catch me now
Are you in or out
Yeah we're walking on a tightrope
Whoo ou ou
Whoo ou
I've given you time
You won't make up your mind
You can't
But you won't set me free
You want things your way
I don't have a say in it
Baby that's not me
That's not me
That's not me
That's not me
That's not me
That's not me
That's not me
That's not me
Yeah
I don't do things by halves
Are you having a laugh
Well I've been around
And I'm telling you now
That we're walking on a tightrope
I don't wanna look down
There's no one waiting
To catch me now

Are you in or out
Yeah we're walking on a tightrope

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Tightrope" by Charlie & Inez Foxx explore the confusion and uncertainty within a relationship. The singer questions whether their partner is fully committed or just going through the motions, repeating the same patterns without any real progress. They acknowledge that this uncertainty has taken a toll on them, but at the same time, they can't bring themselves to quit the relationship. Despite the confusion, the singer doesn't do things halfway and expects their partner to take the relationship seriously.

The metaphor of walking on a tightrope represents the precarious nature of their relationship. The tightrope symbolizes the delicate balance they are trying to maintain, with the fear of falling or failing always present. The singer expresses their reluctance to look down, as there is no guarantee that someone will catch them if they fall. This speaks to their fear of being left alone and unsupported in the relationship.

The frustration and lack of control the singer feels is evident as they mention that their partner won't make up their mind and doesn't give them a say in matters. The singer longs to be set free from the constraints of their partner's expectations and desires. They emphasize that this is not who they are or how they want to live their life, implying that they want a relationship based on mutual understanding and respect.

Overall, the lyrics portray a sense of vulnerability and uncertainty within the relationship. The singer's desires for commitment and clarity clash with their partner's indecisiveness. The tightrope metaphor serves as a reminder of the risk involved in an imbalanced relationship, where one person seems more invested than the other. Ultimately, the lyrics convey the need for honesty, communication, and a genuine commitment to make the relationship work.

Had this years ago, its fine.

@pleiomedesnutcracker2683

To my ear the single released on Stateside in the UK in 1967, whilst clearly the same recording, has a fuller bass sound and a bit less crispness in the treble than this version. Dunno whether that’s intentional or not.
