Sittin' And Thinkin'
Charlie Rich Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Please baby wait for me)
(Wait for me)
(Wait for me)

I got loaded last night on a bottle of gin
And I had a fight with my best girl friend
But when I'm drinkin' I am nobody's friend
But, please baby wait for me until they let me out again

I know the same thing has happened before.
And every time it does
I hate it more and more.
But when I'm drinkin' I am nobody's friend
But, please baby wait for me until they let me out again

(Spend a whole lot of time)
Spend a whole lot of time,
(Spend a whole lot of time)
Sittin' and thinkin'?
(Spend a whole lot of time)
Sittin' and just thinkin' bout you

If I didn't spend so much time sittin' and drinkin'
We'd still have a love that we once knew
Oh, I won't promise the same thing won't happen again
But I can promise, it'll be a long, long time till then
'Cause when I'm drinkin' I am nobody's friend
But, please baby wait for me until they let me out again

Please baby wait for me until they let me out again

Overall Meaning

Charlie Rich's song "Sittin' And Thinkin'" is about a man who has messed up his relationship due to his excessive drinking. He got into a fight with his girlfriend, and now he is pleading with her to wait for him until he sobers up and gets out of jail. The lyrics express the man's remorse and his struggle with alcoholism. He spends a lot of his time sitting and thinking about his lost love and how he wishes he could fix things, but he knows that he won't be able to change anything until he confronts his addiction.

The chorus is particularly poignant, as it highlights the man's internal struggle between his love for his girlfriend and his addiction to alcohol. He knows that he needs to stop drinking to save their relationship, but he also knows that as long as he continues to drink, he will mess things up again. The lyrics "But when I'm drinking I am nobody's friend, but please baby wait for me until they let me out again" convey the man's desperation and regret while also showcasing his inability to change.

One interesting fact about "Sittin' And Thinkin'" is that it was written by Jerry Chesnut, who also wrote several other hits for Charlie Rich, including "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl." The song was released in 1965 and was a moderate hit, reaching number 11 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

I still have the 45 on the Phillips Intl. label, and it remains my favorite Charlie Rich song. This is a rather obscure, hard-to-find record from 1962, and it's good to hear that someone else likes (and remembers) it.

One of the most underrated singers of all time, never given the credit or respect he was due, overshadowed by lesser talented yet better known singers. Nonetheless, a legend by a country mile. Silver Fox, you're the best that ever was.
