A Song for You
Chris Botti & Michael Buble Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been so many places
In my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs
I've made some bad rhymes

I've acted out my life in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now
And I'm singing this song for you

I know your image of me
Is what I hope to be
I've treated you unkindly
But girl can't you see
There's no one more important to me
So darling can't you please see through me
'Cause we're alone now
And I'm singing my song for you

You taught me precious secrets
Of a truth withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding

Ooh, but now I'm so much better
So if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody
'Cause my love's in there hiding

I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
'Cause you're a friend of mine

And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone
And I was singing that song for you

And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
And we were alone
And I was singing my song for you

Whoa, for you
Mm

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Chris Botti and Michael Buble's song "A Song for You" express the journey of the artist through life and music, highlighting the good and the bad. The opening lines of the song say, "I've been so many places, in my life and time, I've sung a lot of songs, I've made some bad rhymes," which portray the life of an artist who has traveled extensively and gained experience over time. Again, the lyrics of the song speak to the artist's ability to perform in front of large audiences while acknowledging the special moment shared with a particular person at the present moment.

Further, the artist speaks of the importance of a special person in their life, conveying the message that despite the ups and downs of life, love remains the most important. The line, "You taught me precious secrets of a true love withholding nothing," suggests that the person to whom the singer is addressing the song has been instrumental in their lives, helping them to understand the beauty and importance of genuine love. Ultimately, the song speaks to the loneliness that the artist feels, despite being surrounded by thousands of people, and the need to connect with a loved one on a personal level.

I’m not trying to rub it in but, I did. I got lucky enough to see them both separately and once and they did this song. I’m sitting here with goose bumps on my neck like I did that night. I now have all of their albums. Both are so crazy talented! 🎙🎺

@bluemarineboy

Michael sings this song with so much connection, and sensitivity - wonderful phrasing (as always). Stunning from Chris Botti too! My favourite version.

@adrianveseli3379

Ever listened to Ray Charles version?

@randyd.1524

Mine too. Leon Russel wrote that in the 70's. Well sung by quite a few.
