A Song for You
Chris Botti & Michael Buble Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs
I've made some bad rhymes
I've acted out my life in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now
I know your image of me
Is what I hope to be
I've treated you unkindly
But girl can't you see
There's no one more important to me
So darling can't you please see through me
'Cause we're alone now
And I'm singing my song for you
You taught me precious secrets
Of a truth withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
Ooh, but now I'm so much better
So if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody
'Cause my love's in there hiding
I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
'Cause you're a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone
And I was singing that song for you
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
And we were alone
And I was singing my song for you
Whoa, for you
Mm
The lyrics of Chris Botti and Michael Buble's song "A Song for You" express the journey of the artist through life and music, highlighting the good and the bad. The opening lines of the song say, "I've been so many places, in my life and time, I've sung a lot of songs, I've made some bad rhymes," which portray the life of an artist who has traveled extensively and gained experience over time. Again, the lyrics of the song speak to the artist's ability to perform in front of large audiences while acknowledging the special moment shared with a particular person at the present moment.
Further, the artist speaks of the importance of a special person in their life, conveying the message that despite the ups and downs of life, love remains the most important. The line, "You taught me precious secrets of a true love withholding nothing," suggests that the person to whom the singer is addressing the song has been instrumental in their lives, helping them to understand the beauty and importance of genuine love. Ultimately, the song speaks to the loneliness that the artist feels, despite being surrounded by thousands of people, and the need to connect with a loved one on a personal level.

I've been so many places
I have traveled to many different locations
In my life and time
Throughout all of my years of existence
I've sung a lot of songs
I have performed many musical compositions
I've made some bad rhymes
Some of my lyrics have been poorly written
I've acted out my life in stages
I have presented my life experiences to an audience
With ten thousand people watching
A large group of people were observing me
But we're alone now
In this moment, it is just the two of us
And I'm singing this song for you
I am dedicating this performance to you
I know your image of me
I am aware of the perception you have of who I am
Is what I hope to be
I aspire to live up to that image
I've treated you unkindly
I have not always been kind to you
But girl can't you see,
Can you not comprehend
There's no one more important to me
You are the most valuable person in my life
So darling can't you please see through me,
Understand me beyond what is obvious
'Cause we're alone now
With just the two of us present
And I'm singing my song for you,
I am performing this piece solely for you
You taught me precious secrets
You have shared valuable insights with me
Of a true love withholding nothing,
The essence of a genuine love without conditions
You came out in front
You took the lead
When I was hiding,
When I was trying to remain unseen
Ooh but now its so much better
It has improved significantly
So if my words don't quite come together,
If my lyrics are not entirely coherent
Listen to the melody
Pay attention to the tune
'Cause my love is in there hiding
The underlying emotion of love is embedded in the music
I love you in a place
I love you on a level that is indescribable
where there's no space or time,
Beyond the constraints of physical dimensions
I love you for my life
You are an essential part of my existence
'Cause you're a friend of mine,
Because you are my close companion
And when my life is over
At the end of my life
Remember when we were together
Recall the moments we shared
And we were alone now,
In those instances of solitude
And I was singing my song for you
When I was performing for you
Woow for you
Expressing admiration and dedication to you
Mmm

I’m not trying to rub it in but, I did. I got lucky enough to see them both separately and once and they did this song. I’m sitting here with goose bumps on my neck like I did that night. I now have all of their albums. Both are so crazy talented! 🎙🎺

Michael sings this song with so much connection, and sensitivity - wonderful phrasing (as always). Stunning from Chris Botti too! My favourite version.

Ever listened to Ray Charles version?
@randyd.1524
Mine too. Leon Russel wrote that in the 70's. Well sung by quite a few.
