Looking for You
Chris Farlowe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A looking for you, everywhere
I miss the touch of your fingertips
The burning fire of your sweet lips
How can I go on like this
Baby, I need you

A looking for you, oh everywhere
Since the day, that you left me
I got sad and lonely memories
Thinking how it used to be
Baby, I need you

I stopped at places we used to go
I've asked they've seen you
But nobody knows
I look for you up and down the street
But baby, oh I need you

Yeah, come back
Oh that's why I'm...

A looking for you
Yes I am
Every everywhere
There's a pain inside of me
'Cause I need you so desperately
I want more than old memories
Baby I need you

Oh I need you baby
That's why that's why

You know I
I'm looking for you
Oh my my my my everywhere
Oh yeah
I'm looking for you darling
But I don't know where
Just looking baby

Everywhere
Can't stand it, looking for you

Overall Meaning

In Chris Farlowe’s song “Looking for You,” the singer expresses his deep longing for his lost love. He admits to “looking for you everywhere” and missing the simple yet intimate touch of his beloved’s fingertips and burning fire of her lips. He cannot seem to go on living a life without her, and thus the course of the song follows his plead to have her return. The lyrics do an excellent job of emphasizing the profound pain, loneliness and desperation that a heart can feel after a heartbreak.

The singer, in his quest to find his love, has stopped by places they used to visit and has even asked people if they have seen her, but to no avail. It is as if she has vanished without a trace, leaving him to wander about in a futile search for her. Despite all of this, he still keeps on hoping that maybe one day his lost love will return. The chorus where he pleads for her return is emotionally charged with his cries of “Come back, oh that’s why I’m looking for you.”

"Looking for You" was released in 1966 by British singer Chris Farlowe, and became his highest charting single, reaching number seven in the UK charts. The song was written by John Edward McLaughin, better known as John McLaughlin, who is an English guitarist, bandleader, and composer. McLaughlin is known for his work in the jazz and jazz fusion genres, but he also wrote songs and played guitar for several rock bands in the 1960s, including Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, and the Graham Bond Organization.
