Falling Star
City of Ashes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been waiting here for days
Just to hear you call and say my name
But silence is the sound
And you've not been around
In heart for quite sometime now.

In truth you don't know who you are
And I am here falling like a star
And I lie beneath this painted sky.
Lies blur lines behind these eyes.

The weeks are dragging on
I'm trying to be strong
Losing faith in all I've come to know.
If love can grow so cold
Then what was this all for?
Bitterness just took these hearts

In truth you don't know who you are
And I am here falling like a star
And I lie beneath this painted sky.
Lies blur lines behind these eyes tonight.

So paint a picture or write a verse
And love means nothing when lies come first.
I'll settle down once I leave this town
And hide regret behind the sound

In truth you don't know who you are
And I am here falling like a star

And I lie beneath this painted sky.
Lies blur lines behind these eyes tonight.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Falling Star" seem to revolve around a couple who are faced with a challenging situation. The singer of the song has been waiting for his lover to reach out and talk to him, but instead, he's been met with silence. The person he has been waiting for doesn't seem to know who they are, leaving the singer feeling like he's falling like a star. The lyricist uses the metaphor of a painted sky, which represents the beauty of life's opportunities, but lies blur the lines behind these eyes, representing the distortion of reality caused by lies.

The singer is trying to be strong, but he's losing faith in everything he's come to know. The love that once flourished between the couple has now grown cold, leading him to question its existence. The bitterness and brokenness have taken their toll, leaving behind a trail of hurt and regret.

In the last stanza, the singer mentions that he will "settle down" once he leaves that town, indicating that he is planning to move on from this relationship. The person he's been waiting for has still not made a sound, and he's left with his regret, which he wants to hide behind the sound of music. The last two lines reiterate that the lies have blurred lines behind these eyes, hinting at a sense of disillusionment experienced by both the characters.
