Wired for Sound
Cliff Richard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I like small speakers, I like tall speakers
If they've music, they're wired for sound

Walking about with a head full of music
Cassette in my pocket and I'm gonna use it
Stereo out on the street you know woh oh woh...

Into the car go to work I'm cruising
I never think that I'll blow all my fuses
Traffic flows into the breakfast show woh oh woh...

Power from the needle to the plastic
AM FM I feel so ecstatic
Now it's music I've found
And I'm wired for sound

I was small boy who don't like his toys
I could not wait to get wired for sound

I met a girl and she told me she loved me
I said you love me then love means you must like what I like
My music is dynamite woh oh woh...

She said I'm not a girl you put on at a stand by
I am a girl who demands that her love is amplified
Switching to overdrive woh oh woh

Power from the needle to the plastic
AM FM I feel so ecstatic

Now it's music I've found
And I'm wired for sound

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cliff Richard's "Wired for Sound" celebrate the joy of music and the technology that allows us to carry it with us wherever we go. The song starts with a confession by the singer that he likes both small and tall speakers, as long as they can play music. He then goes on to describe how he walks around with music in his head, carrying a cassette in his pocket, and enjoying the stereo sound on the street. Even when he goes to work and faces traffic, he remains wired for sound, thanks to the power of music that flows through him.

The chorus emphasizes the power of music, as the singer declares that he is "wired for sound." He then reveals that he was a small boy who didn't care much for toys but always loved the sound of music. Later, when he meets a girl who claims to love him, he challenges her to embrace his musical taste and get "amplified" with him. The song ends with the singer celebrating the passion he and his girl share for music.

Incidentally, if anyone wants to watch it in the same 360p glory it is available on Tidal if you are a member. I only posted this here as a Cliff fan and to discuss that special 1980s era and the fashions etc. Plus I love the track and video๐ŸŽง๐Ÿ‘

Back in the early 80s my mate and I bunked off school and travelled up to McDonalds in the shopping centre for a cheeseburger fries and a strawberry milk shake. We were mooching about and noticed a commotion at the far end. We could hear the music and saw a crowd. It was this being filmed. I remember seeing the skaters and recognised Cliff. He was one of my mums favourites and I was dying to tell her I'd seen him. I told her about 20 years later. Still got a clout round the ear!

I bunked off school to go to Central Milton Keynes on the bus to watch the making of this Video. Was there all day. I took a liking to the Roller Skating lady in blue, talked to her and bought her a Mc Donaldโ€™s coffee!

I inherited my brotherโ€™s bedroom when he went to Uni in 1980โ€ฆ..along with his books and desk and his clock radio.
I was in heaven and this song was on at the time, lots.
It meant and still does mean so much to me as I was โ€œwired for soundโ€ and still am today.
What a song for the time.
