The back-story is that our drummer Dan Gaskill was at the Martha's Vineyard "town rager" when Conor Oberst approached him, plastered as all hell. They talked briefly about Conor's punk band Desaparecidos before Connor asked him if he was currently in a band. Feeling a little uncomfortable, probably due to the fact that this critically acclaimed musician was screaming in his ear, Dan attempted to create some space between them and tells Conor that he is a 'Close Talker'. Thinking that was the answer to the initial question, Conor exclaims that it is the greatest band name he has ever heard.
Upon his arrival in San Diego, Dan joined a short lived band called The Osophists. During name change discussions (apparently no one knows what an 'Osophist' is) Dan tells the story of his conversation with Bright Eyes. The name Close Talker was heavily considered by Osophist guitarist Tim Penwell, but the band broke up before the name ever reached a marquee. Years later, Dan's childhood friend and former Unbusted (see 'Stuck on You' soundtrack) guitarist Jackson Sandland came to California wanting to start a band. Eager to return to the stage, Dan called Tim to start the song writing process.
It was a rocky start complete with shady practice spaces (porn studios, airplane hangers, etc.), stolen gear, and non-existent bass players. Then out of nowhere, Derry Van Nortwick, mutually splitting from his rock/reggae band 'Project Out of Bounds' brought what he describes simply as "thunder" and helped put all the missing pieces in order.
After being conceived in Massachusetts and lying in utero for years, Close Talker has finally been born.

But I'm not to sort it out anyways
I'm lost to where you and I became
4 or 5? Secondary faith
And I know, and I know I'm not supposed to speak my mind
I've been told, I've been told, heard it all a thousand times
And I know I've been old enough to step up and try
But I've sometimes been in doubt
But I've never seen you, so what?
And I'll usually work it out
But I've never seen you, so what?
Why are the questions all asked the same?
Move towards no understanding
Why do they want us to be just acquaintances
And I know, and I know I'm not supposed to speak my mind
I've been told, I've been told, heard it all a thousand times
And I know I've been old enough to step up and try
I've been told, I've been told, heard it all a thousand times
And I know, and I know I'm not supposed to speak my mind
I've been told I've been told that I have the reasons why
Been awhile since had the chance to speak my mind
Back and forth though I know I've found the reasons
But I've sometimes been in doubt
But I've never seen you, so what?
And I'll usually work it out
But I've never seen you, so what?
And you'll always wait it out
Even though I'll be stumbling round it
But I'll usually work it out
When I've never seen you, so what?
The lyrics to Close Talker's song "So What" touch upon themes of confusion, frustration, and the desire for deeper connections. The first verse reflects a sense of uncertainty and confusion in a relationship. The phrase "We're not going to figure this out today" suggests that the situation is complex and cannot be resolved immediately. The singer also expresses their reluctance to analyze or sort out the situation, indicating a level of emotional detachment or avoidance.
The line "I'm lost to where you and I became 4 or 5? Secondary faith" hints at a loss of understanding and certainty about the relationship. The mention of "4 or 5" suggests a period of time or a stage in the relationship that has become blurred or indistinct. "Secondary faith" implies a diminished belief or trust, potentially implying that the bond between the singer and their partner has become less significant or meaningful.
The following lines express a sense of frustration and restraint. The singer acknowledges that they are aware they shouldn't speak their mind, likely due to fear of negative consequences or because they believe they won't be heard. The repetition of "I've been told, I've been told, heard it all a thousand times" emphasizes the repetitive nature of being silenced or dismissed. This repetition also suggests the singer's longing to break free from this pattern and express themselves authentically.
In the chorus, the phrase "But I've never seen you, so what?" is repeated multiple times. This could refer to both a physical absence and a lack of understanding or connection between the singer and their partner. Despite their usual ability to work through problems, the absence of a deeper connection leaves them unsure and questioning the relevance of their efforts.
The second verse poses more questions, expressing frustration with the repetitive nature of these unanswered inquiries. The lines "Why are the questions all asked the same? Move towards no understanding / Why do they want us to be just acquaintances" reflect the singer's exasperation with a lack of progress and a desire for a more profound connection. The repetition of being told not to speak their mind further highlights the suppression of their emotions and thoughts.
The final section of the song expresses a combination of determination and resignation. The lyrics "And you'll always wait it out / Even though I'll be stumbling round it / But I'll usually work it out / When I've never seen you, so what?" convey a sense of acceptance that the other person will always be patient and wait, even if the singer struggles or stumbles in their attempts to find resolution. The repeated phrase "But I've never seen you, so what?" underlines the ongoing uncertainty and lack of clarity in the relationship, raising the question of whether continuing efforts are worthwhile.
Overall, the lyrics of "So What" explore the complexities of a relationship where understanding is lacking, emotions are suppressed, and the longing for a deeper connection remains unfulfilled. It delves into the frustrations and doubts that arise when faced with persistent obstacles to genuine communication and connection.
