Give me a ticket for an aeroplane
I ain't got time to take no fast train
Oh the lonely days are gone I'm coming home
My baby she wrote me a letter
I don't care how much I've got to spend
Oh my lonely days are gone I'm coming home
Yeah my baby, she wrote me a letter
She wrote me a letter
Said, "She couldn't live without no more"
Listen to me Mister ?
My baby once more, anyway
I don't care how much I've got to spend
I'm gonna find my way, way back home again
Lonely days are gone I'm coming home
My baby, she wrote me a letter
Well she wrote me a letter
Said, "She can't live without me no more"
Listen to me Mister ?
My baby once more, anyway
Give me a ticket for an aeroplane
I ain't got time, take no fast train
Oh the lonely days are gone I'm coming home
My baby she wrote me a letter
My baby wrote me a letter
My baby wrote me a letter
My baby wrote me a letter
The song "The Letter" by Joe Cocker is about a man who is eager to return home to see his baby, who has written him a letter. He is so determined to get there that he is willing to spend all of his money, and doesn't have time to take a fast train - he needs to get there as quickly as possible. The man reflects on how lonely he has been, but now he has received a letter from his baby, he knows he can come home to her. The lyrics suggest that the man believes his life is now complete, now that he has his baby's letter.
The repetition of the lyrics "Oh, the lonely days are gone, I'm coming home" indicates a strong sense of relief and happiness in the singer. He has been away for a long time and is finally able to return to the person who matters the most to him. The line about not being able to live without him suggests that their love is true and that they are meant to be together. The final repetition of "My baby wrote me a letter" emphasizes the importance of the letter and the effect it has had on the man. It is clear that this letter has been a game-changer in his life.
Overall, the song is a romantic and nostalgic take on the power of love and the importance of communication. It shows how one letter can change someone's entire outlook on life and make them willing to do anything to be reunited with the person they love.

Saw Joe in concert when I was eleven. Stevie Ray Vaughan opened for him. Stevie died two months later. Great show. I'll never forget it.
