Simpson began to record songs in his bedroom during the summer of 2009 on YouTube, performing Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours", "Cry Me a River" by Justin Timberlake, and his own songs, "One" and "Perfect". He was subsequently discovered on YouTube by Shawn Campbell, a Grammy-nominated record producer who has produced for Jay-Z and other artists and moved to the US in June 2010 to sign with Atlantic Records. His debut single, iYiYi (featuring. Flo Rida), was released in June 2010 and peaked in the top 20 in Australia and top 30 in New Zealand.
Simpson released two studio albums with Atlantic Records, Paradise (2012), and Surfers Paradise (2013), before departing the label due to creative differences in August 2014. His first independent release, 2015's Free, marked a shift from his teen pop music to a more acoustic rock singer/songwriter sound. In 2017 he formed a band called Cody Simpson and the Tide, and released the blues and surf-rock influenced EPs Wave One (2018) and Wave Two (2019) before splitting in 2019.
In 2019, Simpson returned to solo work, releasing the single Golden Thing on 18 October, a song he wrote about his then-girlfriend Miley Cyrus.
In December 2020, Simpson revealed on Instagram that he had qualified for the Australian Olympic trials in the 100m butterfly, but failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics after finishing in 8th place in the trails in Adelaide in June 2021. He is currently training to make the 2024 Paris Olympics.
On 25 January 2022, Simpson released his first single in more than two years, Nice To Meet You, the first single off his upcoming 4th studio album, due to be released in early 2022.

Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Everyday people like you
And me just wanna live naturally
Times are true and you told me
"Nothing gonna get us down, can't you see?"
If it don't matter to you, it don't matter to me, woah baby
People all around making sounds and all kinds of noise
If I could only get there, then I could enjoy
Who they tryna be? Who they tryna fool, let's change the mood right now
Turn down the lights, it's time to cool it down
If it don't matter to you, it don't matter to me, woah no no no
If it don't matter to you, it don't matter to me, woah baby
Yesterday, what we could be? It don't matter
Getting more of what we don't need, it don't matter
Everyday I'm less of you
It doesn't matter to me
No, woah
Bring it on down, bring it on down to me
Sing it all down, sing it all down to me
Bring it on down, bring it on down to me
If it don't matter to you, it don't matter to me, woah no no no
If it don't matter to you, it don't matter to me
I say if it don't matter to you, it don't matter to me, oh no no no
If it don't matter to you, it don't matter to me, no no no no don't matter
Cody Simpson's "It Don't Matter" is a song about getting through life's challenges with the right perspective. The beginning of the song introduces the idea that people just want to live their life normally and naturally, without any drama or stress. The main chorus of the song is repeated twice and emphasizes that if something doesn't matter to one person, it shouldn't matter to the other either. This can be interpreted as a message of love, empathy, and understanding towards others without judgment.
The next verse takes a more critical tone towards society and its noise. Cody Simpson questions who people are trying to be, and who they are trying to fool. He suggests that we need to change the mood by turning down the lights and "cool it down." The final verse discusses how things that do not matter to us can be disregarded, suggesting that people should focus on what matters the most to them.
Overall, "It Don't Matter" is a song that promotes a philosophy of not stressing over things that are not essential, encouraging listeners to focus on what is important to them. The repetition of the chorus strengthens the idea that we must have empathy towards others by not judging them for their perspectives and accepting their differences.
