Something Just Like This
Coldplay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been reading books of old
The legends and the myths
Achilles and his gold
Hercules and his gifts
Spider-Man's control
And Batman with his fists
And clearly I don't see myself upon that list
But she said, where'd you wanna go?
How much you wanna risk?
I'm not lookin' for somebody
With some superhuman gifts
Some superhero
Some fairy-tale bliss
Just something I can turn to
Somebody I can kiss

I want something just like this
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo
Oh, I want something just like this
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo
Oh, I want something just like this

I want something just like this

I've been reading books of old
The legends and the myths
The testaments they told
The moon and its eclipse
And Superman unrolls
A suit before he lifts
But I'm not the kind of person that it fits

She said, where'd you wanna go?
How much you wanna risk?
I'm not lookin' for somebody
With some superhuman gifts
Some superhero
Some fairy-tale bliss
Just something I can turn to
Somebody I can miss

I want something just like this
I want something just like this

Oh, I want something just like this
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo
Oh, I want something just like this
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo

Where'd you wanna go?
How much you wanna risk?
I'm not lookin' for somebody
With some superhuman gifts
Some superhero
Some fairy-tale bliss
Just something I can turn to
Somebody I can kiss
I want something just like this

Oh, I want something just like this

Oh, I want something just like this
Oh, I want something just like this

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Coldplay and The Chainsmokers' hit song Something Just Like This are about the desire to find a romantic partner who is not a superhero or a fairytale character, but just a regular person who can be relied upon for love and support. The verses describe various heroes from myths and comics, but the singer admits that he does not see himself as exceptional as they are. However, his love interest reassures him that she is not looking for a hero, but rather for someone who is a real person, imperfect but lovable. The chorus repeats the phrase "I want something just like this," which underlines the singer's longing for a simple yet fulfilling relationship.

The song's lyrics are not only about love, but also contain references to popular culture, including Marvel and DC superheroes, Greek mythology, and even the moon's eclipse. The theme of the song may be interpreted as a commentary on society's obsession with pop culture and the pressure to be extraordinary, even in relationships. It is refreshing to hear a song that celebrates the ordinary and the mundane, rather than glorifying the superhuman.

I remember jamming to this song almost every day during lunch breaks with my best friend back then when it was first released. We were 15 at that time. Can't believe how fast time went by... Now I'm 20, my best friend passed away 7 months ago and gosh I miss her so much. This song will always remain bittersweet for me as it reminds me of those beautiful days I spent in her company and how deep within , I wish I could have turned back the wheel and enjoy this song one last time with her.

Edit : Thank you so much for all your likes and sincere wishes❤️
