This movie solves a lot of flaws from the original musical but introduces new ones. Here are the things I liked, didn't like from both of them:

I loved this scene, but it makes me kinda upset because this is what I wanted the whole movie to be like, some bizzarre and creative scenography(like Connor appearing from behind them before singing), Connor especially, I wanted him to be like in the original musical, but even there it wasn't enough, for being an imaginary friend Evan uses to escape reality I expected him to be in his counsciounseness more. While I liked some of the songs, I think their introduction was bad and felt innatural, this is the most bizzarre one and yet it felt the most natural and plaesant to see and hear because of its good scenography that is not just character standing there and start singing out of nowhere, and some songs I just didn't like their genre compared to this one, like Alana's songs

I instead praise how they handled the ending, they concluded each character better than the original musical, this time I felt satisfied in the ending because it was a fair closure to Evan Hansen's main conflict of accepting who he is, but also concluded Connor's character and the rest of the family by making Evan start caring for the real Connor, thing that in the musical doesn't happen, and it all feels more rushed.

So what upsets me the most is that... not only this movie, this whole story was so close into being one of my favourite stories but it has just so many flaws that lower it down

Honestly, this is what the entire movie should've been. Speaking as someone who hasn't seen the stage version, I think if this movie was re-written as a dark comedy rather than playing it straight, then it would've been so much better.

Colton Ryan is seriously a brilliant performer. He has subsequently been on Broadway in other shows, as well as TV movies. Of course, the saddest thing about this happy number is that it’s not real, just a figment of Evan’s imagination. At the end, Connor sings “A Little Closer,” which is the real Connor, a painfully lost soul. (P.S., I saw Colton today in the Broadway show, “New York New York.” He’s so multitalented, and it was a great show)

Conner and Zoe probably also never interacted at school or parties since they don’t have a good relationship and it’s very unlikely Evan would follow her to her car which would be the only time her and Conner would really interact

This was probably one of my favourite parts of the movie. It was just a nicer and happier moment and felt like a great way to escape into a better reality where there was no suicide or depression and everyone was just happy.

Colton was asked in a YT interview if he just romped through the choreography. He said, no, it was really hard work, they rehearsed it for three weeks, and he was unsure of his abilities. Of course, he’s absolutely great, but even the most talented people get nervous.

I for one never understood why Evan gets so much blame. He tried to tell the truth, but Connor's parents didn't want that. So he told them things they wanted to hear and that he wished were true. It didn't harm any one. And after all, Evan is already seeing a shrink.

obviously Mike Faist is a bloody brilliant actor but we can’t compare the two. i love Colton’s performance here and even though i love Mike this was amazing as well. Colton has a beautiful voice and he just looks much more like a “bad” or “troubled” kid than Mike did on Broadway, Colton just acts and moves in a very charismatic way and it’s great ❤️

I think Colton was genuinely the best part of this film, there were close to no good moments but Colton managed to actually catch my attention in both his introduction and this song unlike the rest of the scenes (or in if I could tell her where I walked out of the room because ew.). He portrayed his character amazingly and I was sad that they didn't include him in other parts of the film as they did in the stage production

Unfortunately, neither one of the characters "Loves his Dad." Evan feels abandon by his father who got a divorce, a new family, and moved away. Connor has a step father. Good, bad, or indifferent they are seldom loved. I know I had three of them.

I just want to share the story of how I discovered Dear Evan Hansen the Musical version. So Szin is a talented animator and she did Sincerely Me. I thought it was such a beautiful, cute, wholesome and catchy way of telling his friend that he misses him and that he hopes the best for his wellbeing with a comedic touch. Then I saw the replies of the people who were explaining what the song actually meant as well as the summary for the musical, I swear I've never been more confused at the amount of, "Oh he's singing about a kid who killed himself and they were never actually friends," AND I WATCHED THE MUSICAL AND I BROKE DOWN CRYING.

I really liked this :D The calmness in his voice made me surprised when his dancing was so energetic. I noticed two pride decorations and i know it's not important but i still like it. The different situations they're in are dynamic and the singing is nice too. The third friend joining in at the end was funny and the scenes looked cool 10/10 :)

The film is good and the casts are really good. The protagonists nailed their portrayals especially Ben as Evan. Of course, what do you expect? This is a musical film, the song was written based on the message of the story. This film has lots of depth. The story has a strong message and a lesson. A mental health should not be taboo and for my personal view the film was good although I preferred the broadway play because it is originally a play before it became a film

Cause in the musical, he acts as Evan's conscience. But in the film, it is unnecessary since they can put things in perspective through proper cinematography. Also, they like Connor to be mysterious in the movie for his ending revelation to be more senseful.

I watched the live stage show and i feel a bit sad we will never know the real connor. i know the story is about not getting that information so we don't make any judgement towards connor and just focus on the pain the people that are left grieving after a suicide happens (and the loneliness that leads towards that act, of course). But i still find it weird as a spectator i empathized with Connor only by knowing he killed himself and his family mourned him.

You know, if I had a nickel for every negatively-reviewed movie I saw where Nik Dodani plays someone attempting to be the comic relief in an otherwise tense story, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but between this movie and Escape Room, it's weird it's happened twice.

Okay, was the movie incredible? No. Was it a dumpster fire that critics said it was? Also no. Yes I also would have liked to see someone else make Evan their own but you can’t beat Ben’s voice and he certainly plays the character well. The story is so impactful and the movie is still absolutely worth watching

This is song is Perfect without context, and, I just wished I've listened to it more than once before knowing the wlole story. It's like a dearest friend is Writting for his friend, you know, as typical... But yeah. Turns out I'm fucking wrong. I really just can't accept the fact that Evan chose to re-write someone's Life through lying, without even knowing him. I just really hope I watched this before I was awakened by the truth that this is just a made up Reputation for a Dead person, a made up memory, Everything is a lie. If you actually think of this, this just concreted the truth that Evan is really a sociopath.

I agree that the unfortunate premise of the story taints many of its great songs when considered as part of the movie/play. (Why oh why did the writers do that when they could have gone in a different direction?). But, it's all fiction and these are still great songs. With 7 billion people on the planet I'm sure there are situations where their sentiment does apply in an honest way. I prefer to throw out the movie/play plot and consider that as the context when listening to them.

I don't think Evan is a sociopath because a sociopath would have never lied in the first place. Evan lied because he was put on the spot and wanted to spare Connor's mom's feelings. A sociopath would have just told the truth and went about his day, since there's no benefit to lying.

Ok, but I actually liked the movie! I watched it recently and it was good. I liked Alana in this version, they included her way more. And I get why people are mad about removing a lot of the songs (Dissappear is my favorite) but I don’t think the movie sucked.

It’s actually because they changed his dad from his dad to his step dad, and the lyrics no longer worked. I think they wanted to add more conflict between Connor and his Dad by using that. Stupid change but meh.
Also the song makes no sense since they also added the fact Connor had a boyfriend before he died, so the only guy he loved wasn’t just his dad, it makes no sense anymore 😂

Well it also makes sense since Connor didn’t have a good relationship with his step dad and obviously that like for Evan doesn’t make sense either. The way they altered it to just Jared singing both the lines and then them cutting him off bc of the childishness was actually pretty smart

@@orangesngrievers461 well since evan doesn’t have a clue what connor’s actually like he wouldn’t throw in anything like that bc this is his fantasy version of the friend he always wanted. If this was brought up in the musical i think it would have been a really interesting way to show the difference between Evan’s fantasy connor and the real person. Fantasy connor can easily say he loves his parents. Fantasy connor likes all the things evan likes. Fantasy connor isn’t gay, or picks fights, or does hard drugs. And that’s the version of connor that everybody mourns.

Way to go, producers. Hire a seriously talented young actor/singer/dancer and then never use him but for this one scene. He should have been cast as EVAN. Who could ever believe that someone so charming and good looking would be cast as Connor, who has ZERO friends and is supposedly a BAD person? Someone please make amends for this unfortunate misuse of this Colton Ryan guy. At least I'll remember his name now. I wish him the very best.

Not a feel-good story and I feel like a monster for saying I truly enjoyed it. I went into it blind and wasn't expecting it to be so harsh. Still keep thinking about it. There's something about imperfect characters that I find so fascinating, especially since they never tried to redeem Evan. He was just another broken kid. What he did was unforgivable, but this actor really made you sympathize. I don't know.
