Peace In The Valley
Connie Francis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Down in the valley, the valley so low,
Late in the evenin', hear the train blow.
Hear the train blow, dear, hear the train blow,
Late in the evenin', hear the train blow.

The train won't stay, love, it goes right through.
It will be gone, love, and so will you!
Know I love you, dear, know I love you,
Angels in heaven know I love you!

The train is gone, love, and out of sight;
Goodnight my darlin', darlin' goodnight!

Goodnight my darlin', darlin' goodnight!

Overall Meaning

In Connie Francis's song Down in the Valley, we follow the story of someone who is left behind as their lover leaves on a train that passes through the low valley. Late in the evening, they hear the train blow and they are reminded of what they are about to lose. The singer knows that their love is leaving with the train, and they try to make it clear that they really do love them. They say that even the angels in heaven know how much their love means to them. However, the train won't wait, and it will take their love with it.

As the train passes through the valley and eventually goes out of sight, the singer has to say goodbye. They bid their love goodnight, despite the fact that they wish they could go with them. The lyrics are wistful and sad, conveying a sense of loss and regret as the singer is left alone to deal with the pain of their love leaving on the train.
