He's a Skinhead
Control Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm not trying to be controversial, just say what I see,
Why do all the media, look down on you and me?
Is it because we've got the balls to stand out from the crowd,
and we don't conform to what we see we stand strong and proud,

He's a Skinhead, nobodies fool, he's a Skinhead!
From head to toe, he's the king of cool, he's a Skinhead!
We always hear the same old shit, defiling down the mag,
and the media makes shitty films, to make us skins look bad,
it's typical and predictable, it really is a bore,
the little rich kid, TV's drone, who'll never learn the score.

He's a Skinhead, nobodies fool, he's a Skinhead!
From head to toe, he's the king of cool, he's a Skinhead!

Oi! Oi! Oi! Oi old son, he's out on town and he's havin' fun,
Oi! Oi! Oi! Oi old son, boots and braces are his number one!

Woaaah, woaaah, he's a skinhead!
Woaaah, woaaah, he's a skinhead!

Solo

You can take your stupid thoughts, shove 'em up your arse!
Proud to be a different breed, we're the working class,
all we get is victimised, given loads of strife,
SKINHEADS NOT A FASHION, IT'S A WAY OF LIFE!

He's a Skinhead, nobodies fool, he's a Skinhead!
From head to toe, he's the king of cool, he's a Skinhead!
He's a Skinhead, nobodies fool, he's a Skinhead!

From head to toe, he's the king of cool, he's a Skinhead!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Control's song He's a Skinhead are a clear statement of defiance against the negative portrayal of skinheads in the media. The singer questions why the media looks down on them and asserts that skinheads have the courage to stand out from the crowd. They express pride in being different and not conforming to what they see. The repeated phrase “He’s a Skinhead” is used as a declaration of identity and strength. The lyrics also mention the overarching theme of victimization, stating that all skinheads get is victimized and given loads of strife. Despite this, being a skinhead is viewed as a way of life, not a fleeting fashion trend.

The song speaks to the subculture of skinheads, a group with a complex history that is often misunderstood. Skinheads emerged in the UK in the late 1960s with a working-class identity and a love for ska and reggae music. Over the years, the skinhead movement splintered into different factions and became associated with neo-Nazism and white nationalism. However, many skinheads distanced themselves from those extreme ideologies and preferred to focus on the subculture’s roots of working-class pride and multiculturalism. Control’s song seems to align with this perspective as it asserts that being a skinhead is not about hatred or bigotry, but rather about standing up against social norms and being proud of one’s identity.

Craig Murray ~ Yeah,
One of the most important & positive Skinhead bands that really inspired us over in GREAT BRITAIN 🇬🇧

Was a Skinhead Group Called SKREWDRIVER
The first concept of Skrewdriver was way back in 1975 when
Ian Stuart formed a band & Called itself
TUMBLING DICE

The band mainly played versions of songs by the Rolling Stones & The Who.

But in May 1977 the band changed their name to Skrewdriver & had started to write their own material.

Soon afterwards the first single Antisocial was released at the end of 1977.

Skrewdriver were heading for the dizzy heights of rock stardom after they appeared on a documentary called =

A YEAR OF PUNK 1978
By L.W.T television & were interviewed by Janet Street-Porter .

Soon afterwards SKREWDRIVER Now Took a major image change dropping their Punk look & becoming a Skinhead Band.

Their Debut L.P called
“All Skrew’d Up”
Was soon to follow.

Becoming Skinheads did nothing to improve their image with the Leftist mainstream music press,

Who quickly labelled SKREWDRIVER Fans as Thugs & National Front Supporters.

The Media then called upon Skrewdriver & Sham69 to denounce their patriotic followers.

Jimmy Percy & Sham69 quickly agreed & became really big & Famous.
Of course SKREWDRIVER Declined & The Music Press declared war against them.

That is freedom of speech & opinion in music for ya !
With a Complete ban on advertising & gigs becoming harder & harder to find the band called it a day in 1978.

SKREWDRIVER reformed in 1979 with a new guitarist and a new drummer.
They promptly released the BUILT UP KNOCKED DOWN E.P.

But Once again the advertising ban & the constant attention from the mainstream media led to the band splitting again in 1980.

At the end of 1981 Ian Stuart moved to London & formed yet another line up.
This Time around the band members were a lot more clued up on what kind of reception to expect & they set about building the Skrewdriver following with a vengeance.

So in early 1982 they released the 12” Called
BACK WITH A BANG !

& then Recorded two tracks for the United Skins L.P compilation namely ANTISOCIAL &
BOOTS & BRACES

So Now after years & years of backstabbing & name calling by the music press SKREWDRIVER

Now Available on the underground gig scene decided to get straight to the point & prove that all the Rumours were actually 100% True .

SKREWDRIVER
Were a NATIONAL FRONT BAND & they were actually bloody proud of it.

i used to go to those early Skrewdriver concerts in the early 1980’s & i used to hang on to his every word,
Especially in between songs.

Ian Stuart Gave a Generation of Working Class Youth a Sense Of Pride & Belonging to our Once Great Nations .

@jamesguy1030

matt w ~ Yeah,
i was an original Skinhead from 1979 ~ 1987, So i missed it the first time around,
But the second time around it was more organised & it became the Skinhead army all up & Down Great 🇬🇧Britain.

Even every kid in your class at school was a Skinhead or Punk.
Bands Like Sham69, Madness, The Cockney Rejects, Stiff Little Fingers, Skrewdriver & Splodge were all in the Top Ten at the 100 Club
& SKUNX (Skins & Punx)

Were regular venues for Skinheads & Bands
Along with the growth of Punk in 1977/78
There had also been a steady increase increase in racial violence.

The mainstream media blamed it on the violent youth & the violent music. (Punk/Oi!)
That they were listening to.

Of course the fact that every major city & town was now being overrun with immigrants had nothing to do with it whatsoever.

& the fact that most of the Punk Bands were Left Wing Especially the Clash & the Tom Robinson Band,

Also didn’t seem to matter as the media launched it’s very own Cure,
A musical umbrella movement called
ROCK AGAINST RACISM

Working alongside the GLC the R.A.R Movement Organised quite a few festivals in & around London.

So in response to this
The Right Wing Nationalists launched it’s very own musical umbrella movement called
ROCK AGAINST COMMUNISM

And started to organise their own shows & mini festivals.
Remember that at that time following on from the Southhall Race Riots, where Hundreds of Asians with petrol bombs burned down the Hanborough Tavern public house .

Skinhead Bands were not really welcome anywhere,
& the R.A.C Movement was Just what the scene needed.

A Self-Motivated underground scene that attracted over 500+ people to each gig simply by word of mouth.

Yeah, the NEW BREED had arrived ,
Bands Like ~
SKREWDRIVER,
THE OVALTINEES,
PETER & THE WOLF,
BRUTAL ATTACK,
A.B.H,
LONDON BRANCH,
& THE DiE HARDS,

Were the first Bands to play under the ROCK AGAINST COMMUNISM
Banner.
These bands entertained us & inspired us but only a couple of them gained any real notoriety.

The British Skinhead Movement has spread itself all over the world.
Because it’s one of the most important & interesting youth cults to ever happen.

@jamesguy1030

Thomas Thomas ~ Yeah,
The Skinhead Movement From is earliest creation in the late 1960’s
Inspired many young people, one of these young men was called Ian Stuart.

Ian Stuart, Like so many young men dreamed of a career in Rock ‘n’ Roll
But when in 1977 he formed Skrewdriver,

A Punk Group Based in North West England,
No one could have predicted the rollercoaster ride that he was about to endure.

So with two singles and an album recorded Skrewdriver were heading for the dizzy heights of rock stardom,

But when their concerts became battlegrounds & gained the band a reputation that saw them Banned from London venues,

Disowned by their record label and slaughtered in the mainstream music press,
Most people would have put it down to experience & shuffled off into a Dystopian day Job.

it is Testament to the resilience of Ian Stuart that against staggering odds he refused to be defeated.

This Remarkable Story is well documented in the fascinating book called =
“The Ian Stuart - Skrewdriver Biography”

This Book Records the Historical journey that started as a highly rated punk vocalist mixing with the likes of ~

The Sex Pistols,
Bob Geldof,
Siouxsie & The Banshees,
Motörhead,
Sham69,
Iggy Pop,
Sting from the Police,
& Suggs From Chart toppers Madness,

Right the way thru to National Front Demonstrators,
British Movement Marches,
Ku Klux Klan Leaders,
& Top Skinhead Recruits for the Blood & Honour Organisation that he founded back in 1987.

The Record Shops refused to sell his albums,
Yet they sold thousands,
His Concerts were starved of any publicity,
Yet even his enemies would admit that he could easily fill venues as big as the Royal Albert Hall.

This Remarkable in-depth story traces his early beginnings in Blackpool through to his Murder as a National Socialist & Skinhead Legend in 1993.

Yeah, we’ve all heard stories about rebellious rock stars,
But this is a Truly unique account of a Rebel with a Cause.

And One Who lived through the Pain, Pressure, & Patriotic Pride that was his Life.

I’ll Never forget about Ian Stuart,
He Gave a Generation of Working Class Youth a Sense Of Pride & Belonging to our Once Great Nations.

So even if you Revile this Rock Movement,
it’s ideas,
& it’s Patriotic Music,
This is a very interesting & important piece of Social & Youth Culture History.
