Got You On My Mind
Cookie & The Cupcakes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got you under my skin.
I've got you deep in the heart of me.
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me.
I've got you under my skin.
I'd tried so not to give in.
I said to myself, this affair never will go so well.
But why should I try to resist when, baby, I know down well
I've got you under my skin?

I'd sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of havin' you near
In spite of a warnin' voice that comes in the night
And repeats, repeats in my ear,
Don't you know, you fool, you never can win?
Use your mentality, wake up to reality.
But each time that I do just the thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
Cause I've got you under my skin.

I would sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of havin' you near
In spite of the warning voice that comes in the night
And repeats, how it yells in my ear,
Don't you know, you fool, ain't no chance to win
Why not use your mentality, get up, wake up to reality?
And each time I do just the thought of you
Makes me stop just before I begin

Cause I've got you under my skin.
And I like you under my skin.

Overall Meaning

The song "Got You On My Mind" by Cookie & the Cupcakes is an expression of deep desire and longing for someone. The lyrics convey the idea that the person being sung about is so deeply ingrained in the singer's heart and mind that they cannot resist the urge to be with them. The opening lines, "I've got you under my skin / I've got you deep in the heart of me," suggest that the singer's infatuation with this person has become a part of them, something that they cannot escape, and something that they do not necessarily want to escape from.

As the song progresses, the singer admits to having tried to resist the attraction, saying "I said to myself, this affair never will go so well / But why should I try to resist when, baby, I know down well / I've got you under my skin?" Despite the warning voice in their ear, telling them that they will never win and that they should wake up to reality, the singer cannot help but be consumed by their feelings for this person. The repetition of the phrase "I've got you under my skin" throughout the song emphasizes the all-encompassing nature of the singer's love, and the final line, "And I like you under my skin," reinforces the idea that the singer is happy to be so taken with this person.

Overall, "Got You On My Mind" is a heartfelt and honest expression of desire, with lyrics that beautifully capture the feeling of being completely consumed by love.

Brings back so many memories of my youth dancing to this song in Lafayette, La. my birthplace. Love this song especially and Cookie and the Cupcakes music❤️

@FriendofDorothy

You gotta love a group called Cookie and his Cupcakes! I bought this record as a kid and played the hell out of it. The flip side was "I'm in Love" as I recall. Love the piano in this!! Did Chess ever put out anything less than wonderful?? I doubt it. This is the real deal. I also have "Matilda" by the same group but I like this song better, it's pure classic southern soul to my ears.

@andres60999

This is a heartbreaker, but it’s music to my ears and I listen to it daily; the piano background music just regenerates my soul.

Brings back memories of when I was a kid living in Houston. There was a beer joint not far from our house. I would open my bedroom window at night and I would hear this song being played on the jukebox a lot.
