For The Good Times
Courtney Wing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Living on the road my friend,
Was gonna keep you free and clean.
Now you wear your skin like iron,
Your breath as hard as kerosene.
You weren't your mama's only boy,
But her favorite one it seems.
She began to cry when you said goodbye,
And sank into your dreams.

Pancho was a bandit boy,
His horse was fast as polished steel.
He wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel.
Pancho met his match you know
On the deserts down in Mexico,
Nobody heard his dying words,
Ah but that's the way it goes.

All the Federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him slip away
Out of kindness, I suppose.

Lefty, he can't sing the blues
All night long like he used to.
The dust that Pancho bit down south
Ended up in Lefty's mouth.
The day they laid poor Pancho low,
Lefty split for Ohio.
Where he got the bread to go,
There ain't nobody knows.

All the Federales say
We could have had him any day.
We only let him slip away
Out of kindness, I suppose.

The poets tell how Pancho fell,
And Lefty's living in cheap hotels
The desert's quiet, Cleveland's cold,
And so the story ends we're told.
Pancho needs your prayers it's true,
But save a few for Lefty too.
He only did what he had to do,
And now he's growing old.

All the Federales say
We could have had him any day.
We only let him go so long
Out of kindness, I suppose.

A few gray Federales say
We could have had him any day

We only let him go so long
Out of kindness, I suppose.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "For the Good Times" by Courtney Wing paints a picture of a man who has been "living on the road" for an extended period. Initially, it seemed like his chosen lifestyle would keep him "free and clean," but instead, it has left him hardened, with skin "like iron" and breath as hard as "kerosene." The man may have not been the only child in his family, but his mother regarded him as her favorite, and when he said his goodbyes, she became tearful and disappeared into her dreams.

The song then transitions into a story about Pancho, a bandit boy, with a fast horse that was likened to polished steel. Pancho wore his gun on his pants, a symbol of his confidence in himself and his ability. Even though the authorities believed they could easily capture Pancho any time, they always let him slip out of their sight as they were moved by kindness. However, on the desert plains of Mexico, Pancho met his match and died, and no one heard his dying words. The person who is speaking in the song tells of how Lefty, who used to sing blues, ended up with the dust that Pancho bit. Lefty left for Ohio after, and no one knows where he got the bread to go.

The song concludes with the poets telling the tale of how Pancho fell with Lefty in cheap hotels, and the desert becoming quieter, while Cleveland becomes colder. The story ends, but it is noted that while Pancho needs prayers, Lefty needs a few as well, for he only did what he had to do and is now growing old. The song ends with the repeating line that the Federales say they could have had them any day, but they only let them slip away out of kindness.
