Had a little spat with someone last night and walked out. Woke up feeling guilty, as I always do. Watched this and realised I was being deliberately ‘poked’ . Ceased to feel guilty and now happy to avoid said poker from now till eternity.

Problem is interviewers in the UK cannot actually directly promote a movie, they have to ask the actor real questions. The actor maybe on a press tour but technically it is not allowed in the UK

@Homie Keen Let me first say, that I haven't interviewed in over a decade. But when the person asked me about my current income, I said I didn't see the need to discuss my current income. He asked Why? It is a standard question. I said there is no upside for me discussing it, and it is irrelevant. He asked what do you mean there is no upside? I explained that he has a range in mind, that he likes to see people fall into. If my income is below that range, you will think I'm not qualified. If my income is above your range, you will think I am desperate for some reason. I would rather discuss my qualifications and skills, which are either a good fit for what you are looking for, or they are not. My current pay is irrelevant to that conversation. ( I was polite, professional, and firm in my responses).

This may not work with every interviewer, but it did this time for me. In my opinion, they shouldn't be able to ask about your current income. I hope that helps.

I also appreciate the look of compassion from the gentleman helping Robert at 8:30. Him staring at the interviewer in disbelief afterward is a good touch. This really is the way to deal with people like this. Genuine, caring people who recognize a person is overstepping his bounds are those you want to seek out as allies to negate negativity and disparagement.

its as it KgM cannot grasp RD Jr has come a long way since his earlier years where he got involve dina some bad things. He OVERCAME them and what his relationship is with his father is no one;s business. KGM was treating it like a psychiatrists couch session.. not a junket to promote a movie which is what it was. it was misplaced, ill judged, rude and showed a huge lack of care given RD jr was making it abundantly clear he didn't want to go there.

Robert Downey Jr is one of my heroes. He has taken responsibility for his mistakes and does not pretend they did not happen. He learned from his mistakes and became a better person and a better actor and role model. To do what he did takes a lot of courage. I have much admiration for him.

Several years ago I had dinner with some friends, among the group was a person high up in the reinsurance industry, who specialized in actors & movies. The person asked us to guess who was the most reliable, hardest working actor in Hollywood. No one came up with RDJ --it was not long after one of his highly publicized substance abuse fiascos. The reinsurance person told us that, while RDJ might have some issues in his personal life, when he committed to a project, there was no one who worked harder or was more reliable. I loved RDJ before that, learned a whole new level of respect for him.

Nice little tutorial. I struggle at times to remember to give people the benefit of the doubt when I encounter stuff like this. Fortunately, I'm at a point in my life where I very rarely end up dealing with passive aggressive people.

I have always handled passive aggressive co workers the same way. It works all the time. I have had them go tell on me write long emails to the other managers about me politely shutting them down. I survived working as a supervisor of operations for a luxury retail company behaving just like Robert did. To learn how to shut down coward passive aggressive co workers is a damn super power.

One of the greatest things we can learn about ourselves is that our first reaction, to scream or to come unglued, may actually come from the fact that we are actually reading the situation incorrectly. Whether from a past hurt or exposure to something "like this" our brains want to try and make sense and take action - that is what they are built for. And yet, to take a moment, to be ask clearly and give the other person the opportunity to hear that you think what they are doing is wrong and intentional, and to prove to you that YOU are misunderstanding, is one of the most "grown up" things we can learn to do. The world is not out to get us, however some people in some situations, actually are. Providing clear communication without much emotion by asking the question, "it seems like you are trying to attack me and get a reaction out of me", is more than a fair way to acknowledge and question. Once it is clear, like this was, that the communication is not what "we both agreed to and why I showed up in the first place", you do get to decide where it goes from there. You always have the right to walk away at any point, you can even yell and scream if you'd like once you know what they are up to. What RDJ shows us all, is that his time and energy is not going to be wasted for another moment. Well done!

I watched this video a long time back, it has been one of the single most informative videos that I've ever watched that I actually learned from. I have used this exact formula with slightly more than a few in my past, including one of my latter managers that had it coming and it definitely works! I also gained a tremendous amount of true respect for Robert Downey JR. from this video. I had respect for this man, having grown up watching his films and his characters and his real life FUBAR's and his up's and down's and to see him get to where he is now from where he was way back there, a true testament to bettering ones self and learning from life's lessons.

Such a strong and gracious man. Once again interviewer is asking questions that could be spun into a 24 hour debate team. Mr. Downey took the upper hand and brought this amateur interviewer back to the purpose of the interview. Which was to promote a movie and not to rehash mistakes made in the past. The kids I work with are low functioning special needs and usually have autism, they are quick to comment on some people being fat, so I get nervous to go to Walmart with them.

@Crimson let my share insight into my past situation. Picture studying three years for a bachelors degree in arts and during that time giving up your lifelong dream to become an artist of any sort. You move away from your friends and family for a minimum wage job and a girlfriend that ends up cheating on you. You try to make new friends, one of them gets stabbed in a barfight, dies two days later in the hospital and you find out about it a week later. Life is rough. One day you spontanioulsy write a youtubecomment in hopes that people will find it and you amusing because why not? It low-key blows up a month later.
I know its just a comment and that it means nothing and I have had better times to shine performing but with this timing it just felt like picking up thor's hammer again and feeling that I'm still worthy. You can say what you want about it.

One thing that would make a video like this even more helpful to me would be some text overlays when you’re making a point, and then a summary of text points at the end as your’e wrapping up. It can work during business meetings when e.g. a counterpart/client deviates - out of the blue and you can’t but feel it was planned - from the agenda and hijacks it for a political/his own gain. It happened rarely to me but during those specific moment, I tend to abort - in a friendly way - the meeting and have it rescheduled by calling out the changed agenda. It helps save a lot wasted time, energy and headaches. Great video/explanation!

Robert is by far more intelligent and experienced than that silly journalist . He handled it like a boss , clearly the coolest guy around Hollywood , not because of his roles lately , but because he managed to be himself while pretending to be someone else and following a script . That was very helpful - I never knew what to do with passive-aggressive people, because I am basically direct and not afraid of interacting in a straightforward manner. Also, helpful to know that it's ok to walk out after you go through the steps you showed. That interviewer - whatever his purpose was - made a complete fool of himself.

1. Hold eye contact
2. Maintain the benefit of the doubt: - maybe it’s a weird question or maybe you’re just interpreting it the wrong way.
3. Give them a warning shot e.g. “I don’t know why we’re talking about this but...” (then continue on)
4. Call it out: you need to say “What are we doing here?”, “What are you trying to do?”
5. If they don’t stop, remove yourself from the situation

Boss yelled in my face...i calmly said "Don't yell at me" Boss yelled "Im not yelling at you"! I calmly responded "Yes...you are. I don't need the stress". I walked out of my job. Boss called asked if I quit. I answered that I walked out to avoid jail. Also reminded my Boss I was a grown and this behavior will not be tolerated by me...We spoke the next day, Boss apologized. RDJ is a great example of a man who screwed himself over, worked his ass off to overcome it, became a better person and earned the right to let his past stay there.
I think this is a great warning for other reporters; if the man wants to talk about his past, he will. If not, respect that and move on.

@CDM192 Robert clearly was not prepared to talk about his private life at that interview, he thought he was there to promote " Avengers: Age of Ultron". He has young children he would not want his private life discussed on public media while they are young and impressionable and they and their peers could read it. In twentyfive years time, he may want to bring the topic up himself, but not now. I do not believe Robert used sarcasm. I would not say he was butthurt either. The questions just came out of the blue. If you were to understand how various substances can affect the nervous system you would know that Robert was Not emotionally triggered, but he did intellectually notice that someone had stepped over the line and his body reacted to it. He was astonished and perplexed at the line of questioning, but not overwhelmed. He emotionally remained calm.

I've had interviews far more excruciating than this. So if one chooses to get butthurt and not answer questions then it becomes a Lose/Lose situation. He could have taken the High road and turned it into Win/Win, but he resorted to petty sarcasm.

More importantly, the interviewee needs to know that these types of questions will be asked beforehand and be okay with that. It's obvious RDJ did not see that interrogation coming, which is terrible planning on the interviewer's part. That in and of itself lends to feeling more confident when asking those those questions.

The truth is you don't know why, the only person who knows without a doubt, 100% is the person saying/doing it. The interviewer seems to have no self awareness - no concept of how outmatched he was. Downey could have completely eviscerated him but showed kindness and mercy. In a word, class. RJD in his mature adulthood has grown to become someone I admire and respect more and more.

I know many people already answered the question, but taking it at face value means not reading between the lines and not reading into the possible underlying meanings. A nice example would be if someone asked what your weight is. Taking it a face value means the are literally asking the amount you weigh in your preferred unit of measurement. Instead of what the likely implied meaning is they think you’re fat, or to skinny.
