For What It's Worth
Crosby Stills Nash & Young Lyrics

There's somethin' happenin' here
But what it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
A-tellin' me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down

There's battle lines being drawn
And nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speakin' their minds
A-gettin' so much resistance from behind

I think it's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down

What a field day for the heat (ooh-ooh-ooh)
A thousand people in the street (ooh-ooh-ooh)
Singin' songs and a-carryin' signs (ooh-ooh-ooh)
Mostly say "Hooray for our side" (ooh-ooh-ooh)

It's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line
The man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down

Stop, hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down (we better)

Stop, now, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down (we better)

Stop, children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down

Overall Meaning

The song "For What It's Worth" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is an anti-war protest song. The lyrics speak of the confusion and uncertainty that pervaded American society during the mid-1960s. The song begins questioning the events that are happening and having an impact on society. The lines “There's somethin' happenin' here, but what it is ain't exactly clear" sets the tone for the rest of the song. The second verse talks about the resistance coming from behind, which refers to the lack of support given to the young people who spoke out about the issues they believed in. The chorus tells everyone to stop and take a look at what is happening.

The verses speak about the protests that were taking place in America and the reactions these protests provoked from the authorities. The lines “Paranoia strikes deep, into your life it will creep, it starts when you're always afraid, you step out of line, the man come and take you away” talks about how the authorities were using tactics such as fear and intimidation to suppress dissent. The song also speaks to the idea that violence only creates more violence. The bridge, “What a field day for the heat, a thousand people in the street, singing songs and carrying signs mostly say, 'hooray for our side'” speaks of the potential for violence in these protests, and how it's not what they are about. The song ends with a call to the youth to take notice, to stop, and be aware of what is happening around them.
