I'll Get Over You
Crystal Gayle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One thing 'bout this heart of mine
All my hurts gonna mend in time
It don't leave no scars behind
I'll get over you

I'll find me a guy one day
Who's not scared to give his heart away
When I do, it's safe to say
That I'll get over you

[Chorus]
I'll get over you
I'll get through, and when I do
I'll be good as new
When I get over you

From now on, I think I'll lay low
I'll talk fast but I'll move slow
You taught me all I need to know
'Bout gettin' over you

Sometimes think I love you still
Wonder if I always will
But I know it's just until
I get over you

[Chorus]

Sometimes think I love you still
Wonder if I always will
Love for you's so hard to kill
But I'll get over you

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

In Crystal Gayle's song "I'll Get Over You," the singer expresses emotions of hurt and heartbreak caused by a failed relationship. The opening lines, "One thing 'bout this heart of mine, all my hurts gonna mend in time," suggest that the singer has hope that she will move on from the pain eventually. She believes that her heart won't leave any scars and she will get over her heartbreak in due course.

The second verse implies that the singer intends to find a man who is willing to give his heart to her without hesitation. She believes that when she eventually finds such a man, it will be easier for her to forget the past and get over the previous relationship. In the chorus, Gayle emphasizes that she will get over her ex-lover entirely; she will come out stronger and better. She decides to lay low and take it slow, taking the time to move on and forget about her past relationship. She knows that she learned enough from that relationship to never make the same mistakes again, and that knowledge is useful in ensuring she does not repeat the same pattern.

In the final verse, however, the singer acknowledges that sometimes, she still loves her ex-lover, and wonders if she always will. She is aware that the idea of being in love with someone is difficult to let go of, but she recognizes that eventually, she will get over him.

Overall, Gayle's "I'll Get Over You" is a song about moving on from heartbreak and accepting change. The song acknowledges the struggles and emotions that come with heartbreak but assures that with time, healing is possible.

I have been listening to this song for 30 something years now. Somehow, this video made me really appreciate the line “you taught me all I need to know about getting over you.” I have always loved Crystal’s way of talking/singing the lyrics during live performances.

I was about 6 years old and she became my first crush when this came out on the radio. I love Crystal Gayle. Every girl I've ever dated or married has the same brown hair, eyebrows, high check bones. Crystal was very influential on a young 6 year old boy back then. I still listen and enjoy. And the girl sitting next to me is mad because she just realized I have a thing for Crystal Gayle and she looks like her. Hey, some guys just have a type. Mine is Crystal Gayle...and the girl next to me. I'm not the only one. Plenty of boys had crushes on her when this song came out. Just admit it.
