Dear Professor, this has been one of the most helpful videos I've seen so far on the Rubik's cube. In fact, I appreciate your way of teaching so much that I have been purchasing along the time several of your Great Courses Videos and Books. The only improvement suggestion is to leave each step for the moment you need them. In other words, I found that the introduction of the fun moves added an extra amount of confusion, because if it's not done correctly, you lose ALL OF THE WORK SO FAR. This is my personal opinion, but one step a time in the proper sequence makes all the difference between spending one hour or two weeks to learn the same think.

I average just under 45 seconds when I solve the cube. I've watched a few beginner tutorials to try to teach others and I feel this one is more complicated with longer algorithms to memorize. I did like the way you did the 2nd layer center pairing though.

On most decent cubes white is opposite Yellow, orange opposite Red, and Green opposite blue.
If it's not buy a better cube but it really doesn't matter
I've always found it easier to look for a face that's mostly complete and complete it with the edges correct keep that face on top then its max 8 moves to fill in the centre.
Turn it over make the cross on the bottom then orientate the cross to match the centres 1 combination move. Then orientate the corners another combination move then use the upface downface moves to turn the corners over. Haven't touched a cube for about 40 years but could complete it in around 1 minute if you handed me a messed up one

Great video. Im 3/4s of the way thru it. I remember being around 20 and having a rubics cube and one of the guides back then. It was so fun. Now at 53 learning these new ways, I dont even know what I did back then. None of the moves came back to me. And I could solve one back then in as little as a minute or less. But today I dont even have one but Ill order one on amazon and save this video. Brain exercise. Great video. Like given. I Love Wondrium.

When I first got a Rubik's cube as a kid I tried to solve it by doing each side at a time. I think a lot of people made that mistake. Then I realised you had to do it one layer at a time. It was always the top layer that stumped me. After watching this I am going to dig it out and see if I can finally solve it.

OK this seems complicated but it works and is as good as any other method from what I can find. It's taken me a couple of weeks to really get into the sequence of algorithms but finally I can confidently unravel any starting position in under 5 minutes. I'm never going to win any competitions but at 68 that is not my intention .. just solving the dang thing after over 45 years of picking it up and putting it back in the cupboard again, is all I was after!!!! When I first saw Rubik's cube (early/mid 70's) it was a curiosity at a maths gathering .. nobody knew how the mechanics worked let alone how to solve it. There were NO published solutions but they soon came thick and fast. I seem to recall that a guy called Singmaster published the first authoritative thesis on it and when the group theorists got their hands on it there was joy in maths departments throughout the world! Thank you Prof for finally scratching that itch for me.

I can really advise going to a competition at least once, not to take part but the atmosphere is so cool, many people willing to teach and explain, many other twisty puzzles to buy. I went to my first at 38 and was far from the oldest there (sure lot of kids also).

@Phil o'Macc You are correct. The fastest solvers use a different method called CFOP. It's similar to this method in that the cube is solved layer by layer, but the main differences are that the daisy stage is skipped with the white cross being solved straight to the bottom of the cube (the moves for this are usually worked out during inspection time so it's very fast). After this, the white corners and the four 2nd layer edges are solved at the same time by pairing up a corner and an edge and inserting them together to complete first 2 layers in one step. Finally to complete the top layer everything is done by algorithm memorisation. Facing all the yellow sides up will use one algorithm and moving all the corners and edges to the correct position will use a second algorithm. The tricky part is that there are a ton of algorithms to learn, around 70 in all to cope with all eventualities. The very fastest solvers who regularly achieve sub 5 second times also use other very advanced techniques to shorten the process further but are essentially using this method at its core.

update ... I now unravel at least once each day, usually first thing in the morning. I can consistently get close to 3 minutes and sometimes under. Looking at the speed cubers (under 10 seconds consistently) I assume that they are using some sorts of super shortcuts + extremely fast analysis of the state of the cube at each twist (leading to some clever shortcuts) .. they are young and their brains are like supercomputers .. at 68 I have no illusions that I will never be able to do that but sub 3 minutes remains, for me, a real achievement so once again thanks Prof. Oh, and since nobody else in the family is prepared to learn any algorithms for solution, I am now the wonderboy of the extended family !!

In the beginning, you said that as always we keep the yellow face on the top. I wish you would have done that for steps 2 and 3, too. By the time we got to Step 3, that yellow face reference point was gone and the goalpost was constantly moving around. Maybe it's just me. I'll have to keep rewatching the video to see if I'm overlooking something.

Every time I'm finishing the yellow top. I have 1 yellow corner in the bottom left and perform the "fun move" for the final or second last time... I always end up with 3 yellow corners 😑 and 1 yellow face on the rim. Is there a way to then kick that yellow face to the top or is it game over?

I think it is possible to 'rig' a Rubik's Cube such that it becomes impossible to solve with standard legal moves. In that case, how long will it take for a human to declare the cube ''impossible''? How long for a machine?

My original cube was twisted & turned so much it had to be oild , it eventually fell to bits , never having been solved , unless reconstructed as new , each use after as it always fell to bits , freinds were determined , as was I , yet the cube beat us .

It you have a messed up rubiks cube and want a fully completed cube to display.
There are two ways to achieve this.
Bin the messed up cube and Buy a new one to display.
Another way is. turn a face 45 degrees, push up with your thumb as you continue to turn the face the middle cube starts to pop out flick it out and the tube with a few more twist will fall to pieces. Now put all the centre pieces back in the correct place on the top and bottom.
So it looks like a long cross. Put it on the table then put the 4 corners of the face on the table in the correct place. Now put the 4 centre pieces back in the right place for the middle row.now insert the top face cubes by working across the face, leaving a centre cube till last.
To fit that rotate the top face 45 degrees press down on the last cube and turn the face keeping pressure on until cube snaps back in
Now put completed cube in display cabinet and forget about it.

If your first two layers are solved, that's impossible unless at least one of your corners has been twisted in place, thus making the cube impossible to solve. If this has happened, twist the fourth corner so that the yellow is facing up like the other three, then continuing solving.

yes this can take long at the start, it will get easier quickly if you keep at it. To practice your insight you can also try make a single side all the same color. the daisy is easy to make by doing 180s from there.

you may have a twisted corner, those cubes are not solvable by normal moves, you have to force one of the corners at the end.

I learned the Ideal method decades ago, solving U except for one edge, then solving D except for one edge, then solving the last two edges at the same time. This leaves the middle edges to solve. Solving the middle can then be solved with only two more algorithms. They don't use the UDRLFB, so they are a little more difficult to teach, but the first algorithm rotates the position of three of the edges and only takes a couple of applications to get the positions correct. Then the final algorithm is a way to flip the orientation of two edges, keeping them in the same position. You apply that last algorithm either 1-3 times depending on the cube state and it will be solved.

I'm not sure Ideal would be the solve I'd learn today, but it has the advantage that the most difficult steps to solve, and therfore the easiest to mess up, are in solving the D layer, so if you need to reset because you messed up, you won't be throwing away a lot of work. Technically the way I do it is by moving the middle in a vertical movement, M away and M' towards, which isn't standard notation, and it would be the same as doing R'L or L'R, but then I'm just twisting U instead of trying to remember if I'm supposed to move F or B and in what direction. It solves the same way as standard notation, but unlike how it was shown here, I'm constantly changing the orientation of the cube instead of keeping some sides, like D always facing down.

It was interesting seeing a slow walk through for a different system.

JPerm’s beginner video is definitely easier, but the tips this professor gave for solving white are great. He also saves a few steps on other sections of the solve.

I would say start with JPerm’s method, then come here to speed up a little. (Then eventually go back to JPerm and learn the advanced OLL/PLL stuff).
