What's Going On
Cyndi Lyrics

There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today
Father, father
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on?
What's going on?
What's going on, yeah?
What's going on?
Mother, mother
Everybody thinks we're wrong
Who are they to judge us
Just because our hair is long
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
But just talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
What's going on
What's going on
Tell me what's going on
What's going on?
What's going on?
What's going on?
What's going on?
What's going on?
What's going on?
What's going on?
You tell me, I'll tell you
You tell me, I'll tell you what's going on
The song "What’s Going On" by Cyndi Lauper is a cover of Marvin Gaye’s 1971 hit song. It is a plea for love, peace, and understanding during a time of social and political unrest. It addresses the struggles of both the Black community and the anti-war movement in America. The first verse, "Mother, mother, there’s too many of you crying," is a reference to the pain and suffering of Black mothers who have lost their sons and daughters to violence and discrimination. The second verse, "Father, father, we don’t need to escalate, war is not the answer," speaks to the anti-war movement of the time.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the need for communication and understanding between people, rather than violence and aggression. The line "Picket lines and picket signs, don't punish me with brutality" speaks to the use of police brutality against peaceful protesters. Overall, the song is a call to action to end the violence and hate in the world and promote love and peace instead.

I didn't think I would like this version so much, BUT, Cyndi "nails it." My hats off and my heart opens up for the tremendous amount of soul she put into this sing. Good gracious alive, girl you're good.
