1) Di-rect is a Dutch alternative rock band formed in October 1999 in The Hague, The Netherlands. The band consists of singer Marcel Veenendaal, guitarist Frans van Zoest, drummer Jamie Westland, pianist Vince van Reeken and bassplayer Bas van Wageningen.
The band started in 1999 when 15 year old Jamie Westland (drums) asked his father Dick to help him set up a band. Three other teenagers joined him which are Tim Akkerman (vocals), Frans 'Spike' van Zoest (guitar and background vocals) and Bas van Wageningen (bass). The singer, Tim Akkerman was just 19, the guitar player and the drummer were only 15 years old at that time.
Within a few months Di-rect had completed a five track demo which included the song "Just the Way I Do". 3FM radio DJ Rob Stenders saw them play live and was impressed by them. He played a song from their demo on national radio. This generated considerable interest by record companies. Two months later Di-rect signed with Dino Music/EMI. In the year 2002, they played on every big festival in Holland and their debut album "Discover" came out.
Over the next few years, Di-rect released various albums. In 2003, they released "Over The Moon", containing the singles "Adrenaline", "She" and "Rollercoaster". Two years later, they released a new album called "All Systems Go!". After releasing this album, Di-rect joined the MTV-program "RoadRally". After this show, the band almost broke up, but in 2007 they released their 4th album (nameless). The latest album is a live-album, recored in Diligentia in The Hague.
In 2008 and 2009, Di-rect toured with their new show named "Di-rect doet Tommy", a Dutch cover of the rock opera, written by Pete Townshend.
On March 12th, 2009, Tim Akkerman announced to quit the band, his last performance was at April 10th, 2009 in the Luxor Theatre in Rotterdam, also being the last performance of Tommy.

DI-RECT Lyrics

To another place
Take me where the lights are
Where I can see my face
Discover why it rains on me
Discover why it has to be
Here I am
Who's dreaming and discovering
A searching soul
Discover why it rains on me
Discover why it has to be
Take me
For all I am
Not a little dreamer
But an angry man
Discover why it rains on me
Discover why it has to be
Discover what was wrong or right
Discover why I can't win my fight
Here I am
That little boy
Who's thinking as a teenager
Burn al his toys
Discover why it rains on me. yeah
Discover why it has to be
Searching for a new world
Will it break my heart
Living in my own world
I need a brand new start
Discover why it rains on me
Discover why it has to be
Making some noice
To get a better choice
The only thing is a little thing
The only thing is that voice
In my head
It drives me mad, I won't get
No guarantee
Discover why it rains on me, right
Making al my fantasies, right
If I could leave this misery
So long
All my life I've learned to be
So strong
The only thing is a little thing
Deep down inside of me
Deep down... deep down inside
Deep down... inside of me
Deep down...
Would you take my side
And feel alright
People live to learn things
And I learned to live
Discover why it rains on me
Discover why it has to be
Making some noise
To get a better choice
The only thing is a little thing
Discover why it rains on me
The lyrics of DI-RECT's song Discover are a coming-of-age story of a person trying to understand their identity and place in the world. The song starts with a plea to be taken to another place, where the lights are bright, and the person can see their face. This could be interpreted as a desire to escape from their current situation and find clarity. The person wants to discover why things happen to them, why it rains on them, why life has to be a certain way.
Throughout the song, the person refers to themselves as a little boy who is dreaming and discovering, but also as an angry man who is not just a dreamer anymore. They want to find out what is right and wrong, why they can't win their fight, and why they need a brand new start. The line "Making some noise to get a better choice" suggests that the person is trying to make changes in their life, but they need to be noticed and heard to do so.
The song ends on a hopeful note, with the person saying that they have learned to live, and they have learned that people live to learn things. They ask if the listener can take their side and feel alright, which shows that they are looking for support and understanding on their journey of self-discovery.
Overall, the song is a powerful reflection of the struggles that many people face while trying to understand themselves and their place in the world. It shows that it is okay to have questions, to make noise, and to continue learning.
