His debut album, "Quik Is The Name" was led by the success of two top 20 R&B singles, "Tonite" and "Born and Raised in Compton." "Tonite" even charted on the pop charts. The album ended up reaching 10th on the album charts. None of his successive albums reached the success of his debut, though they have been well received in California, particularly his 1998 release "Rhythm-Al-Ism." His most popular albums are Quik Is The Name and Safe + Sound. . On "Safe + Sound" appears "Dollaz And Sense," which was a diss track to Compton rapper and member of the rival Tragniew Park Crips MC Eiht. Though full of bravado at the time, Quik now admits to fearing for his life during the period.
Instead of joining the G-Funk movement during the 1990's, DJ Quik had his own style that a new version of P-Funk, inspired by artists like Roger Troutman (who even taught him the use of the talkbox, which became a trademark for Quik's sound in the 1990's) and George Clinton. Throughout his career, Quik has collaborated with and produced for artists including 2Pac ("Heartz of Men", "Words To My First Born", "Late Night"), Janet Jackson ("All For You"), Snoop Dogg (e.g. "Doin' Too Much", "Buss'n Rocks", "Don't Tell"), Talib Kweli ("Put It In The Air"), Whitney Houston ("Fine"), Kurupt ("Can't Go Wrong"), Jay-Z ("Justify My Thug"), Xzibit ("Sorry I'm Away So Much"), Ludacris ("Spur of the Moment"), Chingy ("Bagg Up", and "Wurr's My Cash"),Dr. Dre, 2nd II None, Hi-C, Suga Free ("Street Gospel" album and on the "New Testament" album), 8Ball & MJG ("Buck Bounce") and others. Though he formally produced only "Heartz of Men" on 2Pac's masterpiece "All Eyez On Me" album, he went uncredited for work on many other tracks on the album; on that track he used his real name David Blake, because Profile did not allow him to use his stage name. In 2002, he produced Truth Hurts' Top 10 pop hit "Addictive". Quik used an uncleared Hindi sample on the record, and the copyright holders eventually filed a $500 million dollar lawsuit against Truth Hurts' label, Aftermath Entertainment.
Quik faced personal and professional tragedy when his friend and protegé Mausberg was murdered on the 4th of July, 2000. This was compounded by the death of his best friend Daryl Reed soon after.
Following 2000's "Balance and Options" CD he was dropped by Arista Records which in 1998 had bought Profile Records. In September 2005, DJ Quik released his first independent album on his own new label, Mad Science, which was supposed to be distributed by Warner Bros but Quik was forced to let Time Warner and so signed his Mad Science with Fontana/Universal. The album is titled "Trauma" and reflects the turmoil in the producer's life over the past few years. He than released "Trauma: Instrumentals". In recent years he has worked with a 74 piece orchestra during a collaboration with Marcus Miller while working on the score to the movie "Head of State." Over the years, Quik has morphed from a hardcore gangsta rapper to a mainstream producer and rapper who is not afraid to change his style. He has not abandoned his West Coast roots and now produces very much his own unique style.

'Cause we be havin to deal with these punk ass bitches
Check this out
Hey bitch you remember me
It's mista DJ Quik from the Westside of the Tree
And you met me at 2000 where I'm brownin'
That's where me and the PPC were just clownin'
No money in my pocket but I was still fly
Curled to my neck but I got respect
And now I stack fat sacks and ride around in a Lex
And oh my bitch how you changed
I see you rubbin' all on my dick and it's feelin' kinda strange
'Cause then you wouldn't even walk me around the block
But now your tryin' to throw me that toe up cock
I wouldn't touch you with a ten-foot pole
I gots to keep the P in it baby, muthafuck you hoes
But open up wide if you given up head
Because, close mouths don't get fed
I'm talking to punk ass, trick ass, nuttin' ass bitches
What's the name of your perfume Vicious?
Hoes ain't shit, ain't gon' be, aint never will be
And I'ma make you feel bad that you fucked me
So fast-forward tricks this is strictly for my dogs
Ballin' like a muthafucka ragtop hogs
And El Cos keep rollin to this gangsta shit
And when I'm feelin' like being bothered with you bitches
I'm givin ya
[Chorus]
Somethin' for tha mood
Somethin' to get you in the groove
So sip that cognac at get back
'Cause that's just what I'm doin'
What about my bitch on my lap?
(I'm givin' ya)
Somethin' for tha mood
Somethin' to get you in the groove
So sip that cognac at get back
'Cause that's just what I'm doin' (ya know)
What about my bitch on my lap?
Ah
Now it's 5:15 and I'm thinking about niggas Playa Hamm
Mr. Shabby Bleu and Big Jam
Hamm's at Gina's so I hit him on my mobile
87 Sprint him so you know I gots to flow
Yo what's up nigga
Yo same ol' playa
Got some tendas, meet me over at Gina's a little later
Hook it up mobbin' through with D and a couple of half G's
So is you down for the skeaze?
I'm on my way
Now the bitches at Gina's they all wanna see me
Put my telephone down for the LAPD
They passed me, I pass them, and they didn't even trip
Now I'm doin' 55 over the Arlington Dip
In my Lex-o rollin' got me feelin' superior
With the funky white pearl and black leather interior
My niggas in my truck, we ain't givin' a fuck
We carried a very face pace to 42nd place
Snoop Dogg blew it and headed back to the strip
In the left hand turnin' lane niggas steppin' on trick
Bust a right on Normande, the bitches blow for me
But I don't pay 'em no mind 'cause they come second to my homies
Hit the spot and bail but I don't step in the mud
Walk up in the living room where it's smellin' like bud
In the kitchen where it ain't no drinks but a gang a food
Ah, let me pop the trunk 'cause I bought a little.
[Chorus]
Now I dips to the studio to listen to the hits
2nd II None workin' on some brand new shit
And it's tighter that a muthafucka got that swang
While Big J try to take a nigga straight to Beighjing
But I pass on the bud, I mash on the brew
Genuine Draft for my muthafuckin' crew
Tashe's chillin', China just trippin
Chris engineering and Bacon and George sippin'
So listenin' to this track makes you understand
Why niggas still can't fuck with the one-man band
Got my dark lokes clean with the P on my crown
And my black leather trench to the muthafuckin' grown
And I'm faded, knowin' I don't wanna drive drunk
In case I get jacked got my shit in the trunk
Now I might have been swerving but I made it to the tent
Just another day in the life of Quik
I'm givin ya
[Chorus]
The lyrics to DJ Quik's "Somethin' 4 Tha Mood" are a commentary on his experiences with women and his relationships with them. The song is a combination of smooth beats and rough lyrics, creating the perfect atmosphere for Quik to express his frustrations with the women in his life. He begins by addressing "punk ass bitches", who he claims are difficult to deal with. He then goes on to recall a woman he knew in his past who has now changed - she is now interested in him sexually, but he has no interest in her.
In the second verse, Quik switches gear to focus on his male relationships. He mentions his friends, Playa Hamm, Mr. Shabby Bleu, and Big Jam, and how they meet up at Gina's house to hang out. The lyrics touch on topics such as drinking, smoking weed, driving around town, and listening to music. The song ends with Quik reflecting on his day and how he was able to handle everything life threw his way.
