First off I don't think any entertainer should be a superstar IMO, as they really are not very important people, however with that said his music and covers are outstanding and he should and seems to be recognized as such.
I would also offer that many famous groups ripped off and or covered music from other people and became global sensations such as "Respect" from the queen of soul Aretha, original by Otis Redding
"Ice Ice Baby" Vanilla Ice rip off of Queen/David Bowie
"I won't back down"-Tom Petty Original (Sued) Sam Smith "Stay With Me"
"Viva La Vida" Coldplay ripped off Creeky Board, or was it Joe Satriani "If I could fly" or Cat Stephans if we go way back ;)
"I will always love you" by Whitney Houston-Dolly Parton
"Killing Me Softly with His Song"by The Fugees-Roberta Flack
Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ by Cyndi Lauper, the Original is by Robert Hazard, I don't feel so bad singing along now :P

Since I used to play in Orchestra I recognized some of the notes from Metallica's music to Bach which transfer over for some of "Master of Puppets", it's well known to other musicians, no big secret there.

The Music industry is made from rip offs, covers and imitations. the Iconic "Eyes & lips" of Taylor Swift is from Blonde, Elvis hip shape he ripped off on and on, it;'s really no secret at all, at least Leo is honest about who he is.
With all that said as someone who always listened to "Alternative Metal" and groups most people never heard of but loved when I played it for them I think the movie "Airwaves" nailed it, if you've not seen it you should.
