Fox on the run
Dale Watson Lyrics

Her hair shone like gold in the hot mornin sun
She took all the love that a poor boy could give her
And left me to die like a fox on the run
Like a fox, like a fox, like a fox on the run
Now everybody knows the reason for my fall
A woman tempted me down in paradise hall
Like a lonely fox, boys, I need a place to hide
(chorus)
Oh, well drink a glass of wine, boys, to purify our soul
Well talk about the world and the friends we used to know
I see a string of girls who have put me on before
The game is nearly over and the hounds are at the door
The lyrics to Dale Watson's song "Fox On The Run" describe a heartbroken man reflecting on the woman who led him astray and left him to suffer the consequences. The opening lines conjure a vivid image of a woman walking through fields of corn in the morning sun, with her golden hair shining. The singer admits that he loved her deeply, giving her all the love he could, but in the end, she left him to die like a fox on the run. This metaphorical comparison emphasizes the sense of betrayal and vulnerability the singer feels, as if he is being hunted and has nowhere to hide.
In the second verse, the singer reveals that he has fallen from grace and everyone knows why. He was tempted by a woman in paradise hall, which suggests a place of pleasure and temptation. This woman took him for a ride, leaving him feeling like a lonely fox who needs to find a place to hide. This desperation is evident in the repetition of the phrase "like a fox" throughout the song. The chorus offers a brief respite from the pain, with the suggestion to share a glass of wine and reminisce about the world and friends they used to know. However, the final lines of the song suggest that it's too late for redemption, as the game is nearly over and the hounds are at the door.
Overall, the lyrics to "Fox On The Run" are a poignant exploration of heartbreak and betrayal, with a vivid use of metaphor to create a sense of vulnerability and danger. The song is a perfect showcase for Dale Watson's gritty, unvarnished vocal style and sparse instrumentation, which elevates the emotion of the lyrics and leaves a lasting impression on the listener.

Dale is not just a great singer, he's a really good old fashioned guy. Trustworthy dependendable and an uplifting person to be around. He's not the typical entertainer. I'm honored to call him my customer and a friend.

This is a cover of a tune written by Tony Hazzard for Manfred Mann's Earth Band, who were the first to record it in 1968. The Country Gentlemen were the first to record it in bluegrass style.
Roger Moss
Yep; one of Tony's, although it was Manfred Mann - who predated the Earthband lineup. Tom T Hall had the big country hit, of course.
David Meyerson
Great song from a great artist. He sounds like a fifth Highwaymen.

If ever there was a song that was perfect for bluegrass and/or country music, this is it. Hard to believe it was originally written and recorded by Tony Hazzard and the British rock group Manfred Mann.
