It's My Life
Dana Hutson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a hard world to get a break in
All the good things have been taken
But girl there are ways to make certain things pay
Though I'm dressed in these rags, I'll wear sable someday

Hear what I say
I'm gonna ride the serpent
No more time spent sweatin' rent
Hear my command
I'm breakin' loose, it ain't no use
Holdin' me down, stick around

But baby (baby)
Remember (remember)
It's my life and I'll do what I want
It's my mind and I'll think what I want
Show me I'm wrong, hurt me sometime
But some day I'll treat you real fine

There'll be women and their fortunes
Who just want to mother orphans
Are you gonna cry, when I'm squeezin' the rye
Takin' all I can get, no regrets
When I, openly lie
And leave only money
Believe me honey, that money
Can you believe, I ain't no saint
No complaints
So girl go out
Hand it out

And baby (baby)
Remember (remember)
It's my life and I'll do what I want
It's my mind and I'll think what I want
Show me I'm wrong, hurt me sometime
But some day I'll treat you real fine

(It's my life and I'll do what I want) don't push me
(It's my mind and I'll think what I want) it's my life
(It's my life and I'll do what I want) and I can do what I want

(It's my mind and I'll think what I want) you can't tell me
(It's my life and I'll do what I want)

Overall Meaning

In Dana Hutson's song "It's My Life," the lyrics convey a sense of rebellion and defiance against societal expectations and constraints. The opening lines suggest that the world can be challenging, with limited opportunities for success. Despite this, the singer believes there are ways to make things work and dreams of a better future, as symbolized by the aspiration to wear sable someday. The lyrics emphasize the determination to break free from the struggles of everyday life and reject being held down.

The chorus asserts the singer's autonomy over their own life and thoughts. It declares that it's their life and they will do as they please, think freely, and make their own choices. There is a recognition of the potential for mistakes or hurt, but it is implied that this is part of the process of growth. The lyrics also allude to the temptation of material wealth and the willingness to compromise integrity for money.

Overall, "It's My Life" is an anthem of self-assertion and independence, urging listeners to embrace their own autonomy and make their own way in the world, despite its challenges.

The Cowboy

This movie scene, not to mention the song brings such a smile to my face. They just don't make films like THIS anymore. Good - clean - family films. I wish I was back in the 90s!

Vando Serpa

I just watched the movie again today for the gazillionth time! :)

Amateur Erik

For a movie that I really donโ€™t care for, this is one of my favorite scenes in movie history. The song is good and the dancing is nice but really look at this scene. Itโ€™s a collection of different types of people getting along and enjoying life. How can you not smile at this scene?

HALFTHEMIKE

MiMiโ€™s line leading into the scene was absolutely on purpose: โ€œmany tribes in your village, baboonโ€ and the movie flows into a scene with several people dancing from all cultures and backgrounds

ELPJM09

I was 6 years old when this movie came out in 1997. It brings back many memories of my childhood. Even had this movie on VHS. I love how it shows people from different backgrounds dancing to the music, even the rabbi.

Yeah, when they try to do movies like this now it feels forced and contrived. This just feels right, and still sends out a great message.

Rebecca Michael ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŽ—

This movie's a year older than me, and it's been one of my favorites since I was 5.
