Dappled Cities Fly is a five-piece indie-rock band from Sydney, Australia. The members include Hugh Boyce (Drums), Ned Cooke (keyboard, sampler), Tim Derricourt (guitar, vocals), Alex Moore (Bass), and Dave Rennick (guitars, vocals, keyboard). Blending the playful grandiosity of the Flaming Lips and Grandaddy with the chillier sonic explorations of Sigur Rós, their sound at times recalls the mixture of pop song smarts and progressive pomp that both Genesis and their former leader Peter Gabriel perfected around the turn of the '80s. Dappled Cities Fly had several early singles and EP releases that were well received and played widely on Australian radio. Their first album, A Smile, was released in late 2004 and was heralded by much of the press in Sydney and various other media.
Dappled Cities Fly released their second album, Granddance, in November of 2006. The cover art is noteworthy due to the band's name as just "Dappled Cities", minus the word "Fly". Tim Derricourt has explained to the press though that this change was done for artistic reasons and is not an official name change for the band. - Wiki.
Faces
Dappled Cities Fly Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Certain to come for those who while the time away
A fall to some in the faces of faith (see what I mean)
It's grasping and holding sounds like laughing lost in the crowd
And it's better to face down to face down
It's better to face down a face in the crowd
We'll stay at night
It was this one's fault to deny it
A face this face one face
And in this face another face
And though the seams they hold
They are struggling with lakes
And it's better to face down better to face down
And it's better to face down a face in the crowd
Never to break down never to break down
To break
down a face in the crowd
These lyrics from Dappled Cities Fly's song "Faces" describe the idea that there are different beliefs and faiths that people have, and it's important to have respect for everyone's beliefs. The first line of "faith in faiths" suggests that there is a sense of hope or trust in the idea of faiths. The next line describes how some people waste time, while others fall into the faces of faith, meaning they become deeply invested in their beliefs.
However, the line "It's grasping and holding sounds like laughing lost in the crowd" implies that sometimes people become so caught up in their beliefs that they lose their sense of individuality and become lost in the crowd. The chorus of "It's better to face down a face in the crowd" suggests that it's better to confront and deal with the challenges of standing out in a crowd and holding onto one's beliefs, rather than being lost among others.
The next stanza seems to be about piecing together different perspectives and aspects of life. The line "And though the seams they hold, they are struggling with lakes" suggests that although things may appear to be held together, there is still an underlying struggle or tension. The overall theme of the song seems to be about finding one's place and identity amidst a sea of different beliefs and perspectives.
