Girl
Darwins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Damn, what drugs aren't you on?
And can I come along?
You're wasted and stoned when
I am sober as a marble
I think I love you are horrible
I think I love you are horrible

You can't, by my, girl
You can't, by my, girl
You can't, by my, girl

Fishing for your lipstick
You found your cigarettes
You're hacking up the wrapping
As we sit on rotten steps

You're crazy and you show it off
Dear, you're slurring Gorbachev
But you insist on discussing him
You're so wrong but somehow you win
So wrong to kiss you when

You can't, by my, girl
You can't, by my, girl
You can't, by my, girl

You're sweet but you're messed up
Your best friend is a red cup
You're obviously not the one
But you remind me life can be fun

Yeah, yeah, yeah,
Yeah, yeah, yeah,
Yeah

You can't, by my, girl

You can't, by my, girl
You can't, by my, girl

Overall Meaning

In "Girl," Darwin sings about a girl who is under the influence of drugs and alcohol. He seems to be intrigued by her carefree attitude and is contemplating joining her in her state of being. However, he also recognizes that her behavior is reckless and even admits that he thinks it's terrible that he loves her in this state. The chorus, "You can't, by my girl," may imply that he knows getting involved with her would be a mistake, despite the attraction he feels.

The opening lines suggest that Darwin is both fascinated and hesitant about the girl's drug use. He seems to be questioning whether he should indulge in the same behaviors or continue to stay sober. The following lines describe the girl's state of mind and actions - fishing for lipstick, cigarette smoking, and coughing. The lyrics depict a scene of decay and decayed steps, which ties into the idea of being under the influence.

In the second verse, Darwin comments on the girl's antics, calling her crazy, but also acknowledging that she is confident in her behavior. He even notes that she slurs the name of former Soviet leader Gorbachev, but insists on having a discussion about him. Although he admits that she is wrong, he also acknowledges that somehow she wins in their interactions. He later admits that he knows he shouldn't be kissing her in this state, reinforcing the idea that his attraction to her is both exciting and dangerous.

In the chorus and the final verse, Darwin seems to come to terms with the idea that the girl is not a good fit for him. He calls her "sweet but messed up" and notes that her best friend is a red cup, indicating that her priorities are not in line with his. However, he also comments that she reminds him that life can be fun. This ending acknowledges the complexity of the situation and the mixed feelings that Darwin feels about the girl.
