The Riff
Dave Mathews Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Funny how time slips away
looking at the cracks creeping across my face
I remember the little kid living in here
he'll be living here probably until I'm dead.

Please don't leave me, baby
please don't leave me yet.
Sitting in a box away from the world out there
a world piled high with boxes just like this
but please don't ever leave me alone in here
take me out, shake off the dust, shake off the fear.

Please don't leave me, baby
please don't leave me yet.

If you stay with me
that don't mean we gotta stay the same
if you stay with me
well baby, you and me we'll change the game

Well I don't know the man that's livin' in my head
'til you reach down and bring the light back in
no, I don't know the man that's living in my head
if I don't know the woman sleeping in my bed.

Remember how we used to kiss, baby
kiss like it was everything?
Remember how we used to love, baby
love like it was everything?

You stay with me
that don't mean we have to stay the same
if you stay with me
well baby, you and me we'll change the game
you stay with me
I'll follow you and we can start again, baby.

I only got a minute or two to spare
and I gotta whole damn life to fit in there
so why waste time staring at the T.V. set?
like I got dreams to kill and people to forget.

Remember how we used to dance, baby
just like it was everything?

You stay with me
and that don't mean we have to stay the same
you stay with me
baby, you and me can make the change
you stay with me
but that don't mean I wanna stay the same.

You stay with me
well baby, you and me we'll change the game.

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "The Riff" describes the passage of time and how the singer perceives it. He talks about the "cracks" creeping across his face and reflects on the "little kid" who used to live inside him. Despite growing older, the singer feels like that little kid will always be a part of him. In the second verse, the singer describes feeling isolated and trapped in a box, surrounded by other similar boxes. He pleads with someone not to leave him alone in this box and to shake off the dust and fear.

The chorus consists of the singer pleading with someone, presumably a romantic partner or loved one, not to leave him. He acknowledges that if they stay together, they don't have to stay the same and can change the game. In the third verse, the singer acknowledges that he doesn't really know himself until someone else helps him see clearly. He reflects on the importance of intimate connection, both physical and emotional. The song ends with the singer encouraging his partner to stay with him and make meaningful changes together.

Underrated song and album as a whole. This song sends chills through my spine every. Single. Time.

Treasure Chest Reading Quest

I agree bro. This album is beautiful. Sometimes I have a few drinks and put it on and feel complete.

urabus420

this is the one and only DMB song that i prefer in the studio over a live recording...

Robert Blow

urabus420 I think it's because this song, at least the beginning, is quick, clean, and precise. Some other songs of Daves are loosey goosey

How can such a song have so few listens? This became and remains one my most favorite songs since I heard it years ago. And it is exceedingly hard to listen with crying at least a little. Love you Dave!
