Everything You'll Never See
David & The Citizens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And time stood still july was prettier than anything
And though we lived beyond the end of the world with motor waste and wasteland all around
At least it was ours
Yeah time stood still and every morning was the same old thrill
Will I see you again will you speak or let them devils do that for you?
Just let me wrap my tongue around this taste
The picture you gave never goes away
How you give your life to meaningless things and all that you dream about but never will see
And here you once laid on your back in the yellow sunburned swaying grass
Yeah time stands still ten years passes just like that
Should I come up with some conclusion over what has happened
Well somewhere in america they still put poison in their foreheads for fifteen more minutes of fame
That hasn't changed it hasn't changed it's still the same still the same
And you give your life to meaningless things and all that you dream about but never will see

And here you once laid on your back in the yellow sunburned swaying grass
In the yellow sunburned swaying grass in the yellow sunburned swaying grass

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of David & The Citizens' song "Everything You'll Never See" poetically describe the beauty and stillness of a moment in time, specifically the month of July. The following lines paint a picture of a desolate environment, where the only things left are motor waste and wasteland. The singer acknowledges the bleakness of their surroundings but finds comfort in the fact that at least it belongs to them. Time seems to hold no meaning in this setting, with every morning feeling the same old thrill. The singer's thoughts turn to a person who they may or may not see again, wondering if they will speak or let others speak for them. They cherish a picture that was given to them, which never leaves their mind.

The second verse of the song continues with a reflection of the passing of time, ten years seeming to slip away with the same ease as seconds. The singer questions whether they should try to find any meaning or conclusions about what has happened in their life. Despite the passage of time, the world seems to remain unchanged. The final lines of the song return to the theme of the singer and their focus on the person they mention in the first verse. They reflect on their life, realizing that they have given their life to meaningless things and dreams that they will never achieve. However, they take comfort in a memory of lying on their back in the yellow, sunburned swaying grass.

Overall, the song seems to be a meditation on the fleeting nature of time and the impact of the people and moments we experience during it. The contrast between the beauty of moments like July standing still and the harshness of a wasteland environment creates a sense of duality that speaks to the human experience of both clarity and confusion. The focus on a specific person in the verses and the repeated theme of dreaming about things that will never come to fruition suggests a romanticized view of life and the idea that we often get lost in our own hopes and desires.

“I've done some bad things
in my life, Nicolai.
Things I'm not proud of.
I promised someone
that I love very much
that I would never go back
to being that person.
But for you...
I'm gonna make an exception.”

@@Stealcurtains64e -- Of course. Nikolai thought he was this inscrutable X factor, completely impervious to any sort of analysis. Bob told him the story not just to let Nikolai know that he was aware of his identity, but to let him know he could see right through him, that he was easy to read.

And he did it to answer Nikolai's question in the coldest way possible.

"What do you see when you look at me?"

"A scared little boy."

That's what the story is about. It's Bob looking at Nikolai and telling him what he sees under the surface-- even underneath the monster Nikolai is to everyone else-- is nothing more than an abused, scared little boy.

The fact Denzel answered Nikolai's simple question without a straight answer with a story of possibly the guy's own childhood is fantastic writing.
