Glued to the Light

And my dad would laugh as the arms of death pulled me further down till I couldn't see his face
So why do you run when I want you to stay and why does my heart beat so fast today?
We got up and fell down every night glued to the light
Let me tell you something about that town with porn and rotten teeth
Kids grew up round there but soon some got stuck in time and came to life only in the blue
Cause dream's the only thing to keep you going and dream's the only thing to keep you sane
And sometimes I thought we'd be broken by age but there always seems to be yet another page
When we got up and fell down every night glued to the light
So why do you run when I want you to stay and why does my heart beat so fast today?
When we got up and fell down every night glued to the light
We got up and fell down every night glued to the light
The song "Glued to the Light" by David & The Citizens describes the struggle of growing up in a town where dreams seem to be the only escape from a mundane life. The lyrics highlight the singer's memories of falling through the ground, possibly representing the feeling of helplessness that comes with growing up. The dream ends with the singer's father laughing as death pulls them further down, signifying the fear of losing oneself and not achieving one's dreams.
The chorus of the song repeats the line "We got up and fell down every night glued to the light," which serves as both a metaphor for the singer's struggle to find hope in their town and a description of how they spent their nights. The light could represent anything from a television set to a streetlamp, but it is the only thing that keeps them going and helps them forget their troubles.
The song also touches on themes of anxiety, regret, and the fear of aging. The lines "And sometimes I thought we'd be broken by age but there always seems to be yet another page" suggest that the singer feared they would lose their spark as they grew older, but there was always another challenge to face. The final repetition of the chorus leaves the listener with a sense of uncertainty, as the singer's fate remains unresolved.
