Saying there's nothing here for me and
I've got only myself to blame
For being the way I am
Idiot boy, eating mud
You symbolize so much more than you know
While the rain was soaking everything,
He thought
Why can't I just finish what I started?
I've been floating upstream since we parted
Brick by brick
Step by step, oh my god
Everyone says you're hanging your head lower now
Well it's a beautiful day
To fade away, to take a stand
And show them all you're not
Just one more common man
And idiot rules, idiots rule
That's the only thing
That will never change
That will never fade
So why can't I just finish what I started?
I've been floating upstream since we parted
I've been floating upstream since we parted
The lyrics to David & The Citizens's song, I've Been Floating Upstream Since We Parted, depict a person who is struggling with feelings of worthlessness and failure after parting ways with a loved one. The first verse talks about somebody jumping from a balcony, possibly as an act of self-destruction and self-blame, which the singer compares to himself being an "idiot boy, eating mud." The rain, which is soaking everything, could represent the singer's feelings of being overwhelmed and lost. The singer wonders why he can't finish what he started and claims to have been "floating upstream" since the separation, which could indicate that he's been struggling to stay afloat and unable to move on.
In the second verse, the singer reflects on how people perceive him as someone who's hanging his head lower than before. It's a beautiful day to do something drastic, either fade away or take a stand and show everyone that he's not just one more common man. The chorus repeats the same question from the first verse, asking why he can't finish what he started and stating that he's been floating upstream since the separation. The final verse talks about how idiot rules will never change, indicating that society values idiocy rather than intelligence.
The overall message of the song seems to be that life can be overwhelming and difficult, and the loss of a loved one can send us spiraling downward. The singer is struggling to cope with his feelings of worthlessness and failure, but the chorus shows that he's still holding onto hope that he can finish what he started.
