When will the story come to the turning-point?
And make you happy, not being stepped on
By strangers shadows every night
My dearest brother, king of time
Breathing your own made up atmosphere
I was down in the dark when I heard you call
And I ran across the water
With violent winds in my back
I saw the famous sadness
And it filled up evey crack
But if your world is mine
And if your words are mine
And if your blood is mine
Then how could I ever leave it behind?
Sister, sweet sister, what do you see?
Don't marry a picture that could never be
I stand here on my toes to find your place
I've looked everywhere, but the story keeps sliding
Further away
And I sailed across an ocean
On All American Winds
On my way towards something
Somthing my eyes had never seen
And if your world is mine
And if your words are mine
And if your blood is mine
Then how could I ever leave it behind?
Yeah, you're so close now
You're words coming through
I'm sick from this longing, but what can I do?
I'm hanging on still to this thin thread
I'm clinging on to the one thing that you
Never had...
And I ran across a desert
And it took a thousand years
But I was never afraid of anything
'Cause there was nothing left for me to fear
And I sailed across an ocean
On all American violent winds
On my way towards something
Something my eyes had never seen
And if your world is mine
And if your words are mine
And if your blood is mine
Then how could I ever leave it behind?
The song "On All American Winds" by David & The Citizens portrays a story of siblings dreaming of something they hope for, and the journeys they take to achieve their dreams. The song starts with the singer talking to their little sister, who is dreaming of monsters. The singer hopes that one day the situation will turn around for her and she'll no longer feel threatened by the strangers' shadows every night. The singer then turns to their brother and describes how he creates his own atmosphere, while they themselves were in the dark and unsure where his voice was coming from but still followed it.
The song then becomes more uplifting as the singer describes sailing across oceans and running across deserts with violent winds in their backs, towards something they have never seen before. They describe feeling afraid of nothing because there was nothing left for them to fear. The song ends with the singer returning to the line "If your world is mine, and if your words are mine, and if your blood is mine, then how could I ever leave it behind?" suggesting that the siblings' dreams are intertwined and they could never abandon them.
The song portrays a beautiful story of dreams and the lengths people will go to achieve them. It is reminiscent of a journey and possible struggles that people must face. David & The Citizens create a dreamlike soundscape in the song that emphasizes the journey aspect, combined with the emotional lyrics, which all come together for a truly immersive experience.
