Once in a Lifetime
David Byrne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
You may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
You may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"
And you may ask yourself, "Where is that large automobile?"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water from the bottom of the ocean
Water dissolving and water removing

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

You may ask yourself, "What is that beautiful house?"
You may ask yourself, "Where does that highway go to?"
You may ask yourself, "Am I right, am I wrong?"
You may say to yourself, "My God! What have I done?"

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, look where my hand was

Time isn't holding up, time isn't after us
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, hey let's all twist our thumbs
Here comes the twister

Letting the days go by
Letting the days go by
Once in a lifetime

Let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by

Overall Meaning

David Byrne's song "Once In A Lifetime" is a musical representation of a mid-life crisis. It reflects on the state of being in life where individuals feel as though they have become complacent and stuck in a routine. The first verse discusses the idea of being lost in life and ending up in a place that seems unfamiliar as a result of the choices we make. The reference to a shotgun shack suggests that the person's living conditions are less than ideal. The second verse focuses on the idea of people losing control of their lives and the confusion that comes with that loss of control. The lyrical reference to "letting the days go by" is an expression of how people can find themselves just going through the motions of life rather than actively participating in it.

The chorus containing the phrase "water flowing underground" represents the passage of time moving steadily, inevitably, towards the end. The repetition of the phrase "same as it ever was" alludes to the idea that people tend to repeat their same mistakes and habits over and over again, resulting in a sense of stagnation. The transition to the third verse talks about the idea of people losing their sense of self-identity, reflected in the lyric "This is not my beautiful house, this is not my beautiful wife."

Overall, the song once in a lifetime is a philosophical reflection of the human condition where people feel lost, complacent, and even stuck in life. It encourages individuals to seek a fresh perspective on how they lead their lives- to break away from the comfort of the mundane and practice mindfulness and self-awareness.

And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone

Under the rocks, and stones there is water underground
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? Am I wrong?
And you may say yourself, "My God! What have I done?"
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again in to the silent water

I usually don't listen to a song twice in a row cause I'm afraid I'll get tired of it. But everytime I listen to one version of Once In a Lifetime, I just have to listen to other live performances, the instrumental, etc. I don't know what's the magic in this song that always makes me want more

David Byrne is like fine wine, he gets better with age...

You are absolutely correct! Saw him last summer at The Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, Ohio while he was on his American Utopia tour and it was a spectacular show. I hope to get the chance to see him live again. The best part was when he basically stopped the show a few songs in and demanded--in his comically awkward David Byrne style--that they shut down the 2 huge LED screens that are on either side of the stage because they were extremely bright and distracting, they were also greatly taking away from the lighting effects that are incorporated into the show. It took them a few minutes to figure out how to completely shut them down, but he waited, and reminded us that the show is in front of us, NOT on those big screens. It was great, and he was right too. The Rose is not a huge venue and it really does not need those giant screens. The point of LIVE music is to watch the person/people performing on the stage in front of you.

I think it comes from the bad Western habit of considering only young products as only valid, whereas in most other cultures, masters are done with the benefit of time

John Gledhill

Interesting...I find it's been watered down.

John Gledhill

ok, I was a bit of an impatient cunt. I've just watched it through and I know what you mean - it's pretty awesome I I do like that mental dancing from the 80's though
