Us and Them
David Gilmour/Rick Wright/Roger Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Us and them
And after all we're only ordinary men
Me, and you
God only knows it's not what we would choose to do
Forward he cried from the rear
And the front rank died
And the general sat,and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side
Black and blue
And who knows which is which and who is who
Up and down
And in the end it's only round and round and round
Haven't you heard it's a battle of words
The poster bearer cried
Listen son, said the man with the gun
There's room for you inside

Down and out
It can't be helped but there's a lot of it about
With, without
And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about
Out of the way, it's a busy day
I've got things on my mind

For wants of the price of a tea and a slice
The old man died.

Overall Meaning

The song "Us and Them" by Pink Floyd is a powerful commentary on war and the human condition. The opening lines, "Us and them, and after all we're only ordinary men, me and you, God only knows it's not what we would choose to do," sets the stage for the theme of the song. The lyrics suggest that war is a result of humans being unable to understand each other and empathize with their fellow man. The song makes the point that this fundamental lack of understanding is responsible for many of the conflicts and wars throughout history.

The lyrics suggest that the people who start wars and conflicts are not the ones who suffer the consequences. The lines "Forward he cried from the rear, and the front rank died, and the general sat, and the lines on the map, moved from side to side" suggest that the people who start wars are not the ones who are fighting and dying in the trenches. The general who is responsible for the war is sitting safely in the back, moving lines on a map, while soldiers are dying on the battlefield.

The song also highlights the economic and social inequality that often plays a role in war. The lines "For wants of the price of a tea and a slice, the old man died" suggests that poverty and economic hardship can be a contributing factor to conflict. The song seems to suggest that if people were able to empathize with each other, and if economic and social inequality were addressed, many conflicts and wars could be avoided.

This song doesnt make me feel happy, sad, remorse, anger, guilt, melancholy or nostalgia. It just puts me in a place of peace, no emotions attached. This is the only song that can do that for me.

The next time you listen, hear the words. This is one of the greatest antiwar songs ever written. It's about anything but peace. Governments put guns in young people's hands and send them halfway around the world believing they're coming home the same way they left. Have a lovely day.
