Hey There
Davis Jr. Sammy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey there, you with the stars in your eyes
Love never made a fool of you, you used to be too wise

Hey there, you on that high flying cloud
Though she won't throw a crumb to you
You think someday she'll come to you

Better forget her, her with her nose in the air
She has you dancing on a string
break it and she won't care

Won't you take this advice I hand you like a brother
Or are you not seeing things too clear?
Are you too much in love to hear?
Is it all going in one ear and out the other?

Better forget her, her with her nose in the air
She has you dancing on a string
break it and she won't care

Won't you take this advice I hand you like a brother
Or are you not seeing things too clear?

Are you too much in love to hear?
Is it all going in one ear and out the other?

Overall Meaning

Sammy Davis Jr.'s song "Hey There" is a cautionary tale about a man who is blinded by his love for a woman who is just playing with his heart. The first verse sets the tone of the song with the imagery of the stars in the eyes of the man who has not been made a fool of by love in the past but is now blinded by his new love. However, Davis Jr.'s lyrics suggest that this man has lost his intellect and is foolish to think that the woman will come to him when she's clearly not interested, and you can almost hear the worry and concern in his voice as he sings the words.

In the second verse, Davis Jr. sings to the man to forget this woman, who has him dancing on a string as if she has control of him. He advises the man to break this hold that she has on him before it's too late because if he does, she won't even care. It's almost as if Davis Jr. is recognizing that the man is in a difficult place, where he needs to make a decision to either continue dancing on this woman's string or cut himself free from her grasp.

In the final verse, Davis Jr. is once again pleading with the man to take his advice and not be too blindly in love to hear him. He's questioning the man's rationality and whether he's too infatuated to understand the severity of the situation. Davis Jr.'s song is a warning to anyone who's been in this situation before that love can blind you to the potential dangers of a relationship. It's a powerful song that reminds us all to be mindful of our hearts and not let ourselves be manipulated by others.

According to my late Mum my Dad used to sing this to me when I was born. It took a while to track the song down when all I had to go on was Hey there, You with the stars in your eyes.
