Snoopies
De La Soul Feat. Jill Scott Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a hundred years from now
We will not recognize this place
The dollar store is filled with love
Half the parking lot if full of grace
Now, judges with their snoopies on
With glorious and true restraint
A child is gonna rule them all
The prophets of the human race

Hey now, can you picture yourself
Hey now, in the physical sense
Hey now, it's a continuous thing
Hey now, like a mother and father

Pan Am trips, Circle 76, the Ritz
Papa hit the Delta, to pick up at the JFK
I judge nothing, I let her know, AFK
I'm off the front porch and the front screen
Two shocks on my back, the wise look mean
They told me slow down, baby, but I'm a lone ox
The 8-ball said, Dave, you in the wrong lot
Move like sloth, cut cloth with new scissors
You thinking too big, I call Nell Carter
Somebody give me a break, the clutch tore up
You put both hands up, I put four
Can't teach a fast dog how to stand still
Mano y mano it's the hand, the hand still
Somebody give me a break, the clutch went out
Tax slap hands, I'm about to man out
Can't teach em at the morgue how to stand to still
See y'all tomorrow for the man to man

Now that was all so long ago
See the babies, they are running wild
If you get too close, they run away
So tonight we better stay inside
So when everything shall come our way
We simply put my snoopies on
I'll share them with you, I don't mind
Let me be your microphone

Hey now, can you picture yourself
Hey now, in the physical sense
Hey now, it's a continuous thing
Hey now, like a mama and papa

Will I ever get tired of this
Will I ever get turned around
Will I ever get old of you
Give me a break now, the clutch went out
Will I ever go back again
Will I ever get used to me
Will I ever be smart enough
How do I know if I'm totally clean?

It's the elastic youth, coming to size up your plastic troop
Keep a pot of caution, boil it in the hot
I wonder why, so why not
Move like a used car and you get used up wherever you are
So they say me and my crew get it new all day
Couple of shots of calamity
But don't mess with the gram to be sniffed
Too messy for the ego, when you come crashing
There ain't no airbag to dash in and catch ya
She goes down and I look down
She looks up, I don't know what to say
Yo, do that shit, yo, do that shit
But she already done done it anyway
But yo, do understand under the man

Lies another line set of value, open a shape
So when I'm speeding too fast, it don't match the brake

Overall Meaning

De La Soul’s “Snoopies” is a song that talks about the changes that have been occurring in society over time. The lyrics speak about how in a hundred years from now, the world will look different from what it is currently. The dollar store that is now filled with love, and the parking lot that is now full of grace, will have taken on different meanings. The song refers to judges with their snoopies, signifying how even those in authority may still be held accountable for their actions. The chorus emphasizes the importance of human relationships as the physical sense is continuous and like a mother and father.

The second verse of “Snoopies” further solidifies the theme of change discussed in the first verse. The verse talks about the singer’s travel to different places such as Pan Am trips, Circle 76, the Ritz, and Delta airlines to pick up someone at JFK airport. The verse subtly speaks about the journeys one goes through in life. The use of words such as “you thinking too big” and “tax slap hands” reinforce this concept of a journey. The chorus in this verse is repeated with slight changes such as “give me a break, the clutch went out.”

@coolreem

With real hip hop like this, I will make sure I officially buy it - not stream it or rip it. Who is with me? Let's show this generation that we support real hip hop by the use of our money! Bring Hip Hop back.

@howardcho8426

I've bought over 5 copies, already.

@TheVioLox

Who are you to decide which album is real hip hop and which one isn't. You should just buy from the artist you like most out of principle and not out of some misguided sense of shaping the generation.

@coolreem

I can decide because I buy my own stuff. And also, I can say and judge Hip Hop because I am a Hip Hop enthusiast.

@TheVioLox

don't you think it"s a bit arrogant to decide for other people what's real hip hop and what's not. I mean so the millions that listen to for example kanye west are just people without music taste ?

@coolreem

I never called out any other rappers by name as not 'real Hip Hop'. Growing up in Brooklyn during the golden phase of Hip Hop has shaped my viewpoint. Much of the stuff on the radio is garbage filled with empty phrases and curses with no content. Not all of it, much of it. In order to get good Hip Hop back on the radio, it must be done through economic persuasion. Now, I am not deciding for anyone what is real hip hop, but that is my opinion. Real Hip Hop is defined differently by different generations, so whatever is real hip hop to you, then I have no problem with your opinion.
