Simon - AIR (kept in the air with lungs released)
Connie - WATER (being drowned)
Josh - EARTH (buried towards the earth, legs up)
Christian - FIRE

4 newcomers are sacrificed for the elements to be supportive of the village.

Mark - JESTER
Stuffed like a puppet with a jester's cap symbolizing him acting without any reflection. Because he doesn't have any sense of consequences (pissing on the tree), so he can be used as a puppet - so they wear his skin, his image; he is empty nonetheless.

I always feel like we wrongly put ALL the blame on Christian in this relationship.

They obviously both can't have the talk about "Is this relationship worth keeping or not?" . They come from different backgrounds that don't have the same ways to communicate: they constantly disagree about the way of sharing their feelings, or even what feeling in what context should be shared. I really feel that, without a first degree conversation about if they really want to break up, we can't really be mad about Christian for keeping up a relationship like that, especially after what has happened to Dani's family. I knew a couple that wasn't going super well when the guy got a car accident: they stayed together longer even if they felt their love had faded away because it was just too hard in that context to have this kind of conversation. They both confessed after the relationship that they both felt it was over a while ago, but that breaking up sooner in this kind of situation would have been too devastating.

Before the death of Dani's whole family, we could also make the point that Christian feels that Dani is doing a lot of emotionnal labor with him and he just doesn't have the tools to know how to deal with the weight of all Dani's feelings. Even without those deaths, Christian could already feel that he can't get out of this relationship without hurting Dani too much. But as we see so little of that relationship before those deaths, it's hard to judge the true nature of this couple.

Josh is the only character in the film who is able to clearly say things in a way that even a neurodivergent person can get: when Christan tells him he's gonna do his thesis on the same subject as him, Josh straight foward tells him about how he's mad and he disagrees. That's where I mostly find that the character of Christian really has a problem and is making bad choices.

I also find weird how some people put emphasis on how it's bad to pressure Dani to take drugs in the beginning of but think that Christian is an asshole because he had sex with another girl in the end of the movie. The guy was litterally roofied. He was forced to take drugs and then raped. He's not responsible and can't be seen as a bad person for that.

I watched Midsommar just last night and I loved it much that I've spent my saturday digging into it. I was very surprised to see how people in the comment sections of YouTube reacted to the film. It's either "cathartic" or a "cult". I would say it is both.

By the end of the film it indeed becomes very clear that the Harga are a dangerous cult, since Dani's friends have all been murdered. Yet, Dani smiles. Why does she smile ? Has she gone mad ? Has she given in to the cult's manipulation ?

Thing is, Dani isn't powerless in this film. She is actually the character with the most power. Christian was the lucid person before Dani's loss, by explaining to her that her sister is manipulating her. Before leaving for Sweden though, Dani is portrayed as the lucid person : she doesn't over react when she confronts Christian over not being clear about the travel to Sweden. Dani isn't upset when Christian forgets her birthday. Dani is the one worrying the most about her friends disappearing. Dani is against Pelle empathizing with her at some point. Dani is worried about being the May Queen and going on her own. Dani is against the girls comforting her after seeing Christian having sex with Maya. Dani feels bad after seing Christian burn. Dani is very lucid about the whole situation. Yet, Dani gives in to the Midsommar rituals and smiles as Christian burns.

Carl Jung theorized that we lacked a sense of purpose and understanding nowadays, since religion doesn't play the same guiding role as it used to. It's the famous "God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him." from Nietzsche. Spirituality, rituals and a sense of community have held us together for thousands of years. It has held us in very hard times. As for right now, the only purpose and understanding we have comes from our parents, extended family and our place in society. If any of these are lacking, we can easily become very anxious, as portrayed by Dani. So when she is confronted with the Midsommar festivities, she is confronted with what she deeply lacks.

By the end, Dani is ready to see Christian die for what he has done to her, or not done for her. She is starting to embrace the moral standards of the Harga. When she sees the Harga cry in agony while the fire burns, she smiles, because finally she has met a community whose moral standards speak to her. The fire is there to cleanse evil. To Dani, what Christian has done or not done is now evil. So she smiles.

Of course it's a cult. Of course they're murderers. But they also have standards in which they believe, or they wouldn't just jump off a cliff and give up their lives by burning. They smile and are compassionate towards eachother. They kill those who are evil in regards to their own culture.

I'm not going to lie. Even tough I can analyze all of this, I was very drawn by the cult. And I think that's what's really intersting in Midsommar : how a "cult" can actually speak to you. I think that this is big part of why Midsommar is so disturbing.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that James recognized that Christian was sexually assaulted and it was a creepy scene? I hear too many people say that the "mating ritual" scene was funny but it's actually really disturbing. I have no choice but to stan anyone who refuses to play into the "men being sexually assaulted is funny" trope. James is the best :)

@Ariq Syafwan  Yeah no. That scene was in NO WAY funny. Assault is assault regardless of the gender and while I may not have liked Christian's character, I was VERY uncomfortable during that scene.

As a man who has been raped, it truly does hurt that so many people look at sexual assault of a man as a non issue.

If only we lived in a world where people realized that “bad” doesn’t have a look.
